Pleasant Valley Family Newsletter
February 10, 2023
Our mission is to empower and inspire a community of lifelong learners and leaders!
Dear Pleasant Valley Families,
Our staff and learners finished the mid-year process of administering district-wide benchmarking assessments to gauge our learners’ growth, measure learning in reading and mathematics, and reflect on our daily practice as educators. Teachers met in grade-level teams to review these results and engaged in discussions around whole-group classroom instruction and differentiated instructional content and strategies for smaller groups of learners. We want to ensure that ALL of our learners' needs are met at their current instructional levels. MAP reports for students in grades 2-4 were sent home with students last week
.
Please read our policies for absences and missed work. Please try to have your child here every day. If they miss one day, they will miss a lot!
Please keep your children at home if they have vomited or had diarrhea within the previous 24 hours; have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher; have suspected strep but have no throat culture results; or have any symptoms of an acute illness such as runny nose, persistent cough, chills, and/or body aches. Please refer to Policy #8450 and Administrative Guidelines #8450 to read it in its entirety.
Please keep this in mind... If you hear something from your child that doesn't seem right, check with your child's teacher immediately. Should safety ever be compromised, I will promptly notify all families. Creating a safe, orderly, and welcoming learning environment is critical to educating and preparing our learners to achieve their highest potential. The safety of your children will always be at the forefront. We have a very dedicated staff who work hard to ensure your child is welcomed, served, and dismissed safely every day, whether via car, bus, or walking.
As always, I want to thank you for your partnership with Pleasant Valley! We are so appreciative of all of our Pleasant Valley families. Should you ever have any questions, concerns, or just a terrific idea you would like to share, please send me an email at bokas@parmacityschools.org or call the main office at 440.885.2480.
Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Stephanie Boka
Absences and Make up work
Our PV student population's percentage of absences and chronic absences (missing 10% or more of a school year) is concerning. Please make every attempt to have your child at school unless they have a doctor's appointment or reasons listed in the PCSD Family/Student Handbook:
Please keep your children at home if they have vomited or had diarrhea within the previous 24 hours; have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher; have suspected strep but have no throat culture results; or have any symptoms of an acute illness such as runny nose, persistent cough, chills, and/or body aches.
MAKING UP MISSED WORK Make-Up Opportunities
- Students will be given the opportunity to make up work missed due to absences and/or suspension. The length of time for completion of make-up work shall be equal with the length of the absence.
- A student wishing to make-up work, while still absent, should contact his/her school office to obtain assignments. When requesting work, twenty-four (24) hour advanced notice may be required.
Absences due to Vacations
Please refer to Board Policy #5200 for the student and parental responsibility for these absences. Below is an expert in it:
Student Vacations During the School Year
The Board recognizes that protracted or frequent absences from school interfere with the educational program afforded students. Vacations are discouraged during the school year. However, in some cases, family vacations may occur during the school year. In this case, advanced requests to have an absence excused must be submitted five (5) school days prior to the vacation. Excused vacation days may not exceed five (5) school days during the school year. Students will be obligated to complete assignments to ensure no interruption in education upon their return.
- The student assumes full responsibility for obtaining and completing all assignments and materials covered during this absence.
- Teachers are not expected to tutor students for work missed during planned absences.
- After the excused vacation period, the allotted time for make-up work will be equal to the number of days absent.
