Mylan Park Elementary Newsletter
February 2020
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
During the month of February we will be focusing on kindness. In a recent issue of About Teaching Tolerance, Allison Ricket found that the brain can be trained for kindness. Research has shown that charitable generosity activates the reward center in the brain, indicating that our brains are naturally made for kindness. The faculty and staff at Mylan Park Elementary are dedicated to create a kind, welcoming school environment.
Teaching empathy and kindness is essential to building safer schools and a more tolerant, open-minded society that welcomes differences. Our cafeteria will be adorned with a kindness tree. Throughout the month it will be decorated with student made paper hearts to fill the tree full of love. Our halls also proudly display student art work inspired by kindness.
Students, faculty, staff and parents are encouraged to fill out kindness links indicating acts of kindness we have witnessed throughout our daily routines. These links will create a kindness chain that we hope will fill the cafeteria. Kindness links can be found in our office and classrooms.
Our school-wide Kindness Book Club begins this month. Students in grades 3-5 will be reading the book "Shiloh" and students in PK-2 will be reading a new picture book each week. All of these books focus on the importance of empathy, kindness and friendship. You can listen to Mylan Park faculty read these picture books and chapters from "Shiloh" on our website under "School-Wide Book Club."
PTO will be purchasing snacks for Valentine's Day. We will be focusing on friendships, kindness and community building throughout this day.
Mrs. Bartley is spreading joy and love throughout our community this month by partnering with Starbucks! Students will be decorating Starbucks drink sleeves that will be filled with color, positive quotes and kindness. Sleeves will be returned to the Starbucks on Chaplin Rd. (beside Chipotle) for customers to receive on their hot drinks throughout the month of February. What a great way to spread cheer and kindness in our community!

Community Voice
The West Virginia Department of Education requires every county school district to produce a Comprehensive Educational Facilities Plan (CEFP) every 10 years. The final CEFP will function as the district’s “blueprint” for facilities’ expansion, renovation and construction for the next decade. It will link projected facilities’ needs to the district’s strategic plan and educational standards. It will be based on an educational framework and on the condition and adequacy assessments of existing facilities. It will consider enrollment versus capacity. It will factor in the cost to correct deficiencies and to provide equitable facilities.
Mon County Schools’ administrators, teachers and a steering committee comprised of civic leaders and engaged community members have begun our county’s 2020-2030 CEFP process, which will end with the submission of a finalized plan to the Department of Education in mid-June.
The steering committee has defined the following as preliminary high-level goals for the 2020-2030 CEFP:
· * To continue to address ageing facilities, especially those not addressed in previous CEFPs;
· * To expand career and technical education (CTE) and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs at high schools and middle schools;
· * To focus on student wellness, both mental and physical;
· * To continue to improve school safety and security.
Among the next steps in the CEFP process are four structured community dialog meetings, which will be held at Monongalia County’s three high schools and at South Middle School.
- Wednesday, February 19, 2020
- UHS Auditorium – 4-6 p.m.
- South Middle Auditorium – 7-9 p.m.
- Wednesday, April 15, 2020
- Clay Battelle Middle/High Auditorium – 4-6 p.m.
- MHS Library – 7-9 p.m.
Parents, students and community members are encouraged to participate in any one of these meetings to offer their perspectives on continuing improvements to our students’ educational environment.
Additionally, an on-line community survey will be accessible through the Monongalia County Schools’ website https://boe.mono.k12.wv.us beginning February 20th.
Girls on the Run
It isn't too late to sign up for Girls on the Run!
We still have space available for girls in grades 3-5!
Girls on the Run inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate with what makes them one of a kind. Coaches lead small teams through research-based curricula which includes discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls develop skills to help them navigate the world. The program provides girls with the opportunity to impact their community through a service project and at the end of the program girls celebrate with a 5K event!
