Lumberton Township School District
Superintendent's update - February 1, 2023
From the desk of Dr. Colleen Murray...
DISTRICT STRATEGIC GOALS
These next sections are about our new district mission statement and strategic goals. We would love to see you at our February 9th BOE meeting (in the BOE conference room) to learn more about our new mission statement and strategic goals.
FEBRUARY FEATURED STAR PRINCIPLE #TAKERESPONSIBILITY
The focus of this month's STAR principle is #TakeResponsibility. The Core Strategic Planning team that created our strategic goals is taking responsibility for the future of our district. Though incredibly gratifying, this work is not easy, and they should be recognized for their service and leadership. If you see one of the individuals listed below, please thank them for modeling our STAR principle of taking responsibility.
CORE TEAM AND COORDINATORS
THE MAIN EVENT
Listed above, this core group of students, building and central office administrators, union leaders, community members, and teachers and staff convened for two full days in mid-January to conduct the culminating work of our strategic planning work. The finished product is clear and actionable goals to drive our work for the next several years.

Justin comes to Lumberton with a wealth of experience in teaching and administration. Though Justin has spent many days in the district, getting to know our community and preparing for his transition with Mrs. Bowles, he officially begins his Ashbrook journey with us on February 13th. TOWNSHIP COLLABORATION
The team listed below began what will be an ongoing cadence of meetings to develop connections between the Lumberton Board of Education & Lumberton Township Committee and related entities to build a community of learning focused on the children, for the advancement of the Lumberton Township community. Our current focus is around our #STARprinciple #StaySafe
SCHOOL SAFETY UPGRADES
Our dedicated facilities team has positioned numbers on all of our Ashbrook windows to assist emergency personnel in the event of a crisis. Our great facilities crew is presently positioning numbers on each of the windows at the complex. The fire company will run a drill and check our alarm system. We have established a point person and a backup point person in each school. When the alarm system sounds, this person will call 911 as a double safety precaution. We are grateful for our emergency responders.
CLIMATE TEAM - FEBRUARY UPDATE
Ashbrook is ordering SEL supplies/flexible seating for the calm-down room and classrooms, as well as coordinating workshops for students starting in February. Students in grades K and 1 who earned PAWS for positive behavior had a designated time for a dance party in the gym.
Students at Bobby's Run attended a cafeteria orientation for expected behaviors and norms. A positive recognition system was implemented, and additional clarity was provided for students and staff. Students in December were recognized for STAR student for Always Be Kind - students who did not have major infractions participated in a celebration in December.
In LMS, 8th grade is initiating a weekly meeting during common prep periods to design an environment where teachers can share concerns about students who would benefit from restorative meetings. The Words have Weight assembly took place on January 5th and students reflected on three guests' stories of how words have affected their life journey. Restorative coaching emails will be set up to help streamline issues that come up in the classroom and help teachers get the support needed to continue to build relationships with students. Counselors will be implementing boxes in classrooms for calming strategies.
