2nd Annual Principal for A Day
Principal for A Day - Applications Due by Feb 12, 2023
It's that time again! We are getting ready for our Annual Principal for A Day event. Last year's event was such a success that we want to make it an annual leadership experience for our students. The first step is to interview, select and train the Principal for A Day.
The WGSMS Principal for A Day is a leader who will serve in the role of principal for 3 days; however, as the student principal, the leader will have to dedicate days to interviewing, hiring, and training their staff. Also, the student principal will dedicate time to organizing the Principal for A Day 3-day event. The leader will spend several days out of class and will be responsible for all missed class assignments.
This student leader must be one who is creative and innovative. The leader must have good communication skills and have demonstrated self-direction and problem solving within the school and classroom. Finally, the student principal must have good interpersonal skills as this person will meet and engage with all students, staff, parents, community members, and district leaders.
If you are ready for this challenge, please apply by completing the below Microsoft Forms. Once interviewed and hired, you will begin identifying and hiring your staff.
Please ensure your children have their laptops
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Black History Contest
Black History Contest Submission: February 28, 2023
Why is Black History Month Important?
Black History Month is a period that emphasizes learning the many outstanding and phenomenal contributions African Americans have made to the American society. Consequently, Black History Month should empower students with self-knowledge and knowledge of others so that, together, we learn perseverance, peaceful problem solving, and courage.
2023 Black History Month Theme
This year's Black History Theme, "Black Resistance: Building Bridges and Navigating Barriers", takes a look at how African-Americans have fought repression from escaping the plantation, to the rise out of poverty, to the struggle for equal housing and education, to the struggle for voting rights, and much more.
2023 Black History Month Contest
Students have voice and choice in how they want to share their understanding of this year's theme with others. Below are some examples.
1) Video/Tiktok Presentation of Family or Community Heroes/Heroines
- In our community, we have so many phenomenal individuals that contribute to the struggles of African Americans and the success of our individual families and students. These persons are mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, teachers, principals, and others. Design questions and record how this person has built bridges/navigated barriers to improve the community.
2) Black History Invention
- Similar to a Science Fair, students would create an invention as a creator. This invention should be one that improves the community or improves the life of others. The students should construct individual bios (e.g., through a video) introducing themselves, thier invention, and the purpose of their invention. Although studying the past is important, these students are the future!
3) Student Selection Piece
- Every student has a talent. Therefore, for this activity, students may create a product that demonstrates to others their portrayal of the 2023 Black History Theme. Students can create a drawing, painting, monologue recording, a song recording, or a video of their dance. Each piece must be an original creation by the student.
4) Reenacting a Critical Event in Black History
- Students can select an event from history that was a pivotal point related to the 2023 Black History Theme. Join your friends, dress as the characters, and recreate the scene. Present the recording as your project.
Please have all projects approved Principal Smith or your SS Teacher before beginning.
