Nurse's Desk
Please keep your student home if they have experienced vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever (>100) in the last 24 hours.
Fall and winter illness is not uncommon in public environments such as schools. Most of the United States is currently experiencing high rates of respiratory illness, especially among children. This includes: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses (flu A and B), SARS-CoV-2 (Covid), and rhinovirus/enterovirus (cold).
We have several processes in place to attempt to decrease transmission of illness in our schools. These include: frequent wiping of surfaces, air scrubber (purifier) in the Gym/Lunchroom, disinfectant sprays when children are out of room (specifically classrooms with a high percentage of students out with reported illness). The attendance secretaries and nurses work together to monitor reported illness and notify the health department when we meet certain thresholds.
Please continue to reinforce the importance of hand hygiene and covering their cough/sneeze with your student. Soap and water as well as hand sanitizers are located in multiple locations in every building and should be used before eating, after going outside, after using the restroom, etc.
Please reach out to your school nurse with any questions.
Holiday Sing-A-Long
We will record the singalong, make a video, and send it out to our families to enjoy!
Social Work Corner
Happy Holidays! I can hardly believe that it is already that time of year! We have had so much going on and the students have been doing so well that the year has absolutely flown by. There is so much to celebrate this month and I love all of the celebrations and traditions that we have going on at our school, including the Franklin Mall Food Drive and the 12 Days of Haskin.
We are also celebrating our Core Value of the month for December, which is Respect. Having respect here at Haskin means you are acting in a way that shows you care about yourself, others and the environment around you. We are talking about different ways we can show respect to others at both school and at home. We also want to make sure that we talk about how we respect ourselves. This helps develop a positive self-esteem and attitude that continues to foster our growth mindset.
During Second Step, our students are all focusing on Emotional Management. For our younger students, it is identifying emotions and learning some new coping skills. Our older students are starting to learn the purpose behind our emotions and that it is alright for other people to have a different feeling than someone else in the same situation. They all focus on perspective taking, coping skills, and staying calm.
Our first round of SAEBRS testing (our social emotional screener) was completed in October and I have been working on grouping some students together so that we can work together on enhancing some of their skills. I do this after every SAEBRS testing session (Fall, Winter, and Spring) but also factor in teacher recommendations and my observations. The groups are typically once per week and I work with their teacher to make sure that they are not missing any major academic time. This is just one thing we do to continue to support our students being the amazing children that they already are. If your child is selected to be part of a group I will be contacting you and sending a permission slip for social work services home. I would like to get our new groups started as soon as possible as the students really seem to enjoy them and grow.
I am available to chat with you if you have any questions or concerns or need any help. Please feel free to reach out. I am available at 815-786-8812 x (24007) or at rhaskins@sandwich430.org.
I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday season and are able to spend time with the people that matter to you. Enjoy the winter break and don’t forget to take some down time and relax.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
Franklin Mall
The project originated in 1954 when Franklin “Red” Mall and his wife, Peg, began taking holiday dinner groceries to neighbors who needed a little help. That same year, Frankie, dressed in a Santa suit made by Peg, delivered baskets of homemade goodies and fresh fruit to seniors who were spending Christmas alone.
Frankie & Peg are no longer with us, but the Lions Club continues the tradition by collecting goods for people that need some help.

Erin's Law
On December 11th and 12th Haskin will host professionals from Safe Passage into our classrooms to speak with our students about Erin's Law. Please read over the information below. After reviewing the provided information, if you would like your student(s) removed from the classroom during Erin's Law presentations, please let your student(s) teacher know.
What is Erin’s Law?
Erin’s Law, or Illinois Public Act 097-1147, requires public schools to provide child sexual abuse prevention education for children in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades.
How is Erin’s Law taught at Haskin?
In order to meet the requirements of Illinois Public Act 097-1147, Haskin utilizes a local community resource called Safe Passage. Safe Passage social workers provide age-appropriate instruction that will help students recognize unsafe situations, keep themselves safe, and how to respond to unsafe situations. This year, Safe Passage's staff will visit each classroom and deliver an in-person presentation. Common themes instructed at all grade levels include:
- Identifying safe versus unsafe or unwanted touching
- The Safety Rule About Touching (The Touching Rule): Private areas are not for others to touch, except to keep a child clean and healthy
- Understanding the difference between good and bad secrets
Any further questions regarding Erin's Law?
If you have further questions regarding Erin's Law, please click here to view additional information provided by Safe Passage. Once you've reviewed the information provided by Safe Passage, if you have additional questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact the main office at 815-786-8812. If you'd like to opt your student from Safe Passage's Erin's law presentation, please contact your student(s) teacher and let them know.
