Weekly Update 01/10-01/14
Letter from MEB
Happy Wednesday!
This smore is full of great opportunities for PD!
First, please see the information from the ROE regarding PD that explores art created by victims of the Holocaust. All registration and topic details are provided in the link below.
Second, over 100 teachers in the district are participating in LETRS training. LETRS training is a course for teachers that will help support staff as they work with students at all levels (PK-12) at improving phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and writing. If you are interested in finding out more, please consider joining Julie and Sara for LETRS snapshots. Those that attend will receive stipends and CPDUs. Again, this is open to all PK-12 staff that need to know more about helping kids learn to read or to improve their literacy skills.
Finally, Smekens has two great opportunities for PD. You can choose an in-person virtual option or self-paced. If you are interested in the Smekens training, please first speak to your building admin to determine if building Title funds are available. If there are not funds available, please reach out to me directly and we will see what we can do. To find out more, scroll down to the Smekens button within the smore.
Take care,
MEB
Dear Educators,
We at the Holocaust Education Center (HEC) are excited to invite you to a late afternoon/early evening Teacher Workshop and Professional Development event delving into the connection between art and history. This workshop has been developed around a new exhibit of art from prisoners at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The exhibit is entitled:
The Auschwitz Experience in the Art of Prisoners
This exhibit of 59 featured works of art created by 12 survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, who documented their experiences during the Holocaust. The staff of the Holocaust Education Center (HEC)will guide participants through the 24-panel exhibit, and teachers will be provided with curriculum guidance as well as support for bringing their students to the exhibit once it opens to the public.
This exhibit has been made possible by the staff at the Auschwitz Museum in Poland and funded by the HEC, Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation, and Hillel Center on campus.
All participants will receive a classroom activity guide including the biographies of the artists, along with seven thought-provoking learning activities. Of course, you will receive CPDU or Professional Development hours via the ROE. Light refreshments will be served.
Please see the attached flyer for more details about what you can expect during the workshop.
