Martin Luther: Holy or Evil?
Saint?
Only God can grant salvation
Martin Luther states that only God can send people to heaven, not the Pope or the church. He wants people to have faith in God and trust in God to guide them to heaven. Martin believed that this could be achieved, not by listening to the Pope, but by reading and following the teachings in the bible.
The Pope must act according to his own Canon Laws
In his 95 theses, Martin Luther says that the Pope make all the Canon laws in the church but does not obey them. He wants people to realize that God is in charge, not the Pope, and that the Pope is not an exception to the all powerful rule of God.
Your debts to the church do not follow you after death
Martin Luther tells people this as a way of encouragement. He is telling People that they should not be afraid of the church because any debts that they owe will be erased after death and they will only be judged by God. So they should not fight death and instead except it as God's calling.
These all show that Martin Luther is a Saint because he cares about the people and God. He wants people to realize the truth about how to get saved and that the church/pope is not always right. He wants to help guide Christians down the right path to heaven.
Sinner?
Martin Luther fights the Pope
Martin Luther is a sinner in the eyes of the Pope and the church because he chose to dissent and denounce the holy Pope. This is sinful because the Pope is in charge of the Catholic church and spoken to by God, so there should be no doubts to his legitimacy. Anybody that goes against the Pope deserves to get excommunicated and go to hell.
Brought Social Unrest
Martin Luther is a sinner because he brought social unrest to the Europe and the Christian religion. A true saint would have allowed the people to be happy and follow the church's path to salvation. By staying quiet, Martin Luther would have allowed people to buy indulgences and enjoy the lives they had, but instead he argued with the church gave people another path to choose.
Disagrees with church's methods of Penance
Martin Luther is a sinner because he publicly dissents with indulgences and other forms of penance made by the church. This is sinful because he is telling people to not buy/earn penance. If people listen to him and don't buy indulgences they will be sent to hell and it will be all his fault.
