Social Media Matters!

Each week we’ll be sharing some safety tips related to social media!

Did you know the advised minimum age of most popular social platforms is 13 years old?

That excludes just about every one of our elementary students. These include:

Instagram

Snapchat

TikTok

Twitter

Facebook

YouTube

Houseparty

Kik

Tumblr

Twitch

Wonder where the age limit came from? The origin is a 22 year old US law called COPPA – The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The legislation made it illegal to collect or store the personal information of children under 13. By definition, social media platforms collect and store personal info. You may be surprised to learn that in Europe, most social media platforms have a minimum age of 16. When kids misrepresent their age to use the sites, the system that is supposed to protect children is not able to achieve that goal.

Next week, we’ll talk about some questions to consider regarding the use of these sites by children.

Please reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or feedback related to this content!
