November - We Packed A Lot Into a Few School Days

November came and went - quickly. We understand that November can be a difficult month for working families, but we do cherish the time for Parent-Teacher conferences, Teacher Collaboration Days, and the observance of Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Thank you for your patience and for working together as families to support one another with play dates and childcare.

In this month's newsletter, I will highlight the events of November and let you know about some things that are coming up at LCE. Believe it or not, we only have 14 school days in December. Don't worry - we will pack those days full of learning, love, and laughter.

LCE is a Common Sense Media School

I'm so proud of this staff, led by Technology Integrationist and Leader, David Paszkiewicz, to earn this recognition. LCE has received certification as a Common Sense School for 2018-2020. This recognition lets our community know that we're providing a solid foundation of digital citizenship for our students.

Health News

West Nile Virus

Information on West Nile virus is also available at:

We urge people to:

  • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered mosquito spray, wipes, or lotion when outside.

  • Keep mosquitoes out of your home. Maintain your door and window screens in good condition.

  • Check for items that hold water once a week. Cover, clear, clean, and cast out (throw away) items that can breed mosquitoes.

NGSS Committee

Teachers and parent representatives have volunteered and been selected to serve on this committee, and the first meeting is December 5. The committee members will review and select three of the state-approved publishers' materials for our teachers to pilot in the next months.

Challenge Success: No Homework Day

The SPACE Framework is guiding our work with Challenge Success at the elementary schools. SPACE is an acronym that stands for Students' Use of Time, Project and Problem-Based Learning, Alternative and Authentic Assessment, Climate of Care, and Education for the Whole Community.

To support students' use of time, our teachers have been trying to implement our district's new homework policy with fidelity. We planned some "no homework days" so that all of your elementary school aged children could have a common day with no homework in an effort to give you more time as families to spend time together. Dec. 12 will be a No Homework Day!

We are also striving to provide a climate of care, and we are fortunate to have our counselor, Mrs. DeBoer, providing regular lessons, leading small groups, and meeting with students individually to support their social and emotional needs. We also look for ways for students to bond with the adults on our campus, and if you look anywhere, from the carline to the classroom, you'll see examples of this.

Educating the community comes in the form of our Family Learning Series with guest speakers such as Madeline Levine and Peter Crabbe. I also try to offer book recommendations and other resources each month, which you will see below.
