Principal's News

Dear Cliffwood School families,

Wow, the school year is flying by! We are almost at the halfway point and our kids and staff are doing an outstanding job so far. I am so proud of the progress that our learners have made! As we move into the Winter months, and the weather can be unpredictable, here are just a few quick reminders:

  • Please try to dress your child in layers as some classrooms are warmer or cooler than others.
  • Please make sure your child is dressed warm enough and with appropriate shoes to go outside for recess/DPA. We will still go outside for recess, even in the Winter, so long as the blacktop and equipment is dry and it isn't bitterly cold outside.
  • Please make sure that your contact info is current on parent portal. In the event of a school closing, delayed opening, or early dismissal, the district will notify you using the info you have provided. Please check to make sure that your phone number(s) and email address(es) are correct and your preferences for notifications are set.
Please check out the info below and I can't wait to see what our learners do in the second half of the school year! Thanks and take care,

Mark Van Horn, Principal

Great job by our Safety Patrol!

Our Safety Patrol students, led by Ms. L. Pappas, did a great job with their annual holiday season food drive. With our community's help, these students collected more than 700 items for donating to the Monmouth County Fulfill Food Bank!

Rubik's cube challenge was a great experience!

Cliffwood's G&T 3rd grade class recently hosted its first Rubik's cube challenge. The students had worked hard over the past weeks to learn the techniques for solving the cube and their efforts surely showed! We had individual and team competitions and it was a super fun event for everyone involved. A BIG THANKS goes out to Mrs. Royston, Mrs. Bauer, and Mr. Jamandron for their hard work for our learners.

Come out and support a great cause!

Relay for Life is a great cause and Cliffwood's staff is happy to help! This year, more than 25 Cliffwood staff members will be volunteering their time to support the American Cancer Society. Please make plans to visit the McDonald's on Route 34 in Aberdeen on Wednesday, 2/13, and see Cliffwood School teachers and staff working behind the counter between 5-8 p.m. Join us for dinner and see our staff giving back to the community! We hope that you can make it!

Shark Tank is coming to Cliffwood again!

Grade 3 Enrichment students from Cliffwood, Ravine Drive, and Strathmore will be coming together for the 3rd annual Shark Tank Night on Wednesday, 1/23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Cliffwood cafeteria. Families of these participating students are welcome to come see these great inventions to solve real world problems as our students present to a panel of "sharks." It was a great evening last time and should be even better this year!

Get set for our annual author visit!

Renowned children's books author Audrey Vernick is coming to Cliffwood School on March 21st. Our students will be reading some of Ms. Vernick's books as the year moves along and readying themselves for the author's special visit. Linkit! testing is next week

Our Winter round of Linkit! benchmark testing (for Reading and Math) will be next week (January 7 to 11) for all students in grades 1-3. These non-graded, computerized assessments help teachers to learn about your child's strengths and areas of need (and therefore guide instruction). Please contact your child's teacher for info about specific test dates.
