Classroom Happenings
Kindergarten classes have been so busy. They have learned about groundhogs, Valentine's Day, Jeff Mack, nonfiction and animal research. They used captions and pictures to gather information and they are really learning those nonfiction text features.
First grade classes have been doing research about their animals, learning about fairy tales, and famous African Americans. They have learned about IIM (Independent Investigation Method), which is our process for research. I'm amazed at what our first graders can do! Their writing in their products was impressive!
Second grade has primarily been working on Traditional Literature in the library this month. We learned about location and attributes of types of stories that are told and retold. We compared different versions of the same stories and we found the theme in many different stories. We learned about these stories using regular books, AV2 Books, BookFlix books and EricAKimmel.com.
Third grade is doing research learned about biographies. They researched famous African Americans, presidents and authors! They went through the entire IIM process to show their knowledge of research! Well done!
Fourth grade is working on writing, inferencing and Texas history. Ask your 4th grader about the inferencing categories and about the Alamo! We used BookFlix to make our own "paired passages" and in the library we compared poetry and nonfiction books on the same topic to create our own paired passages. Mrs. Hinojosa's students researched and created weather alphabet books, while Ms. Stevens' classes created Texas Revolution alphabet books. There was a lot of good information gathering happening here!
Fifth graders continue with 40 book projects and we have 7 teams of 5th, 4th and 3rd graders who are participating in the Bluebonnet Rumble Competition on March 5. Thanks, Leaders! Classes have worked on their book club work in the library and traditional literature has been a focus for these students, as well!
