President's Message
Tonia Haynie - President
Where were you on September 11, 2001? I remember with clarity the events of that morning. We had a mandatory fire drill at Haughton High School. Walking back to class we began to hear the horrible news that a plane struck one of the twin towers. I can visualize the shocked look on everyone’s face as the morning progressed with multiple attacks on American soil.
September 11 left us with so much uncertainty. We held our loved ones a little tighter in the aftershocks of this tragedy. And as a nation we searched to find the good in the horrific circumstances. Stories began to unfold of unsung heroes. We vowed to never forget and today we respectfully remember those who lost their lives.
Horatio Spafford faced unbelievable tragedies too—numerous unforeseen events. He penned a well known song as he crossed the ocean to reunite with his wife after a tragic shipwreck took the rest of his family. You may immediately recognize these inspirational words he wrote in his own tumultuous time.
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
As you reflect on the current turmoil in our community, state, nation and world, I hope you find peace and encouragement in this beautiful song. I challenge you to pay it forward by encouraging all on the front lines as they experience unprecedented challenges every day.
Blessings to you all,
Tonia

2021 International Conferences: Attend One or Both!
Plans are underway for the 2021 events in Portland, Oregon (July 7-10) and San Antonio, Texas (July 21- 24). The two conferences will celebrate the benefits realized by members through the themes of “DKG: Opportunities, Contributions, and Impact” and “DKG: A World of Opportunities, Contributions, and Impact”. MARCH 2021 MEETING MINUTES ALPHA RHO CHAPTER OF DELTA KAPPA GAMMA
The March 2021 meeting of the Alpha Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma was a virtual Google meet. The meeting was called to order by president Tonia Haynie at 4:40 on March 22, 2021. The Collect was read by Emily Cryer. President Tonia Haynie welcomed the 17 members in attendance and thanked everyone for participating in our virtual meeting.
The minutes of the February, 2021, meeting were approved as distributed. J.J. Stallcup presented the treasurer’s report. The closing balance of the checking account is $3580.90, and the closing balance of the savings account is $1134.81. She also mentioned that she is still taking donations for grants-in-aid and all other chapter causes. Martha Turner pointed out that we need to start collecting dues for next year. J.J. said she will get a system for collecting dues set up before the April meeting. During committee reports, Emily discussed a Google form that she set up for updating member information. Margene stated that she will present any rule changes from the State Convention at our next meeting. Kim reported that she will have more information about our newest members, including pictures, in the next newsletter. Under new business, Tonia announced that our next meeting will be another virtual meeting on April 12th. Pam Carlisle is going to present a program from the Bossier Parish Historical Center titled “Education in Bossier Parish, an Illustrated History.” Tonia said she will create a calendar invite for the meeting with the Google meet link and attachments for the agenda and minutes. During Joys and Concerns, congratulations were offered to Allison Ferraro on the birth of her son, Micah Daniel on March 12th, and also to Micah’s grandmother Judy Grooms. Becky Young shared the news of her grandbaby that was born a week earlier. Martha reminded us that she will be traveling to Africa on March 29th as a member of a team that will be training teachers there. Martha also congratulated Kathye Blackburn on receiving the 2019 Achievement Award from the state. The award was late in being presented due to Covid. Several members gathered at Martha’s home to surprise Kathye as Donnis Poe, state Achievement Award committee chair, presented the award to Kathye. Awards from the 2021 state convention included Northwest Rose in Bloom, Margene Watters; Northwest Rosebud, J.J. Stallcup; and Newsletter Award, Kim Howell. Our Renesting Project was named a Fleur de Lis Finalist, and our chapter was named a Gold Chapter.
Tonia reminded everyone to continue donations for the Renesting Project and for grants-in aid. J.J. said that the Renesting Project is beginning to re-open back up for more distribution days. Christy Williams introduced our program titled Hydroponic Gardening. In an informative video presentation from their home, chapter member Debbie Gegg and her husband John demonstrated the procedure they use to grow lettuce in containers of water. They encouraged members to try this project at homes or in their classrooms. Led by some our musically-gifted members, we joined together in singing the Delta Kappa Gamma song.
The virtual meeting was adjourned at 5:30.
