Math, Science, and Social Studies
This week in math we will begin our study of place value. Students will learn to make numbers 10 times as much and 10 times less than any given number. Students will learn how to write and read numbers correctly. On Thursday, students will learn a new game called "Place Value Strips" that will focus on comparing numbers and saying the numbers correctly.
In multiplication fluency this week we are working on the 10 facts. Last week all students did a fabulous job on the 2 facts. Ten fact cards are in their zipper pouch. They will use these fact cards this week to practice in class and at home each night. Please practice these fact cards with your child for the accuracy check that will be given on Friday.
Science-We spent a lot of our Science time last week learning about the solar eclipse that will be crossing the US today! We are so excited to have the opportunity to go outside and view it today with our solar eclipse glasses. Those who did not return their permission slips will be able to view the live broadcast from NASA inside the path of totality! It is going to be a great day!!
This week we will be completing The Jellybean Classification Lab. Please let me know if your child can not eat Jelly Belly brand jelly beans. If they have an allergy or braces and you prefer them not to eat the jellybeans, you can send an alternative snack on Thursday. This lab is always a class favorite!!
Social Studies-We will switch from Science to Social Studies mid-way through the 9 weeks.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We will be working on building our reading stamina this week. All students should have a book to read when they come to my classroom. We will be discussing expectations of independent reading as well. I will be assessing students reading this week using a variety of methods--comprehension checks, computerized assessments, fluency checks, and informal observations. I will continue reading picture books and chapter books aloud.
Writing--We will be using our Writer's Notebooks to build our writing stamina this week. We will focus on creative writing and brainstorming this week. Writer's Notebooks might come home with students, but they must return them the next day.
