Continuous Improvement
It sounds like such a simple concept but in reality it is quite complex. Continuous improvement requires a lot of moving parts to work together in order to produce improved student outcomes. As we have worked with districts through Differentiated Assistance this year, we have asked them to reflect on the question, “What is the Process and Structure by which you or your organization improves?” It is important to recognize that improvement requires a commitment to both.
A district can identify a process like Improvement Science or Design Thinking but not have the teaming and meeting structure in place to execute the process. Conversely, a district can have the structure of leadership teams and regularly scheduled meetings in place but if there isn’t a process by which they are engaging in disciplined inquiry they will not clearly identify root causes and implement sustainable change. Time and attention needs to be paid to both, the process and structure, by which a district improves.
The attached infographic is a great overview on some of the key feature of real continuous improvement. Our goal in the Equity and Educational Progress division is to help you see how all of the tools like the LCAP, SPSA, the CA School Dashboard, MTSS, Data Literacy, and the Improvement Science framework can help you and your organization learn your way towards improvement. We hope to offer a number of trainings and networks in the upcoming year that can support you and your district as you “continue to improve.” Feel free to reach out at any time to inquire about support.
