Is Your Kid a Digital Citizen (Taken from Common Sense Media)
Cyberbullying, the spread of misinformation, oversharing: They all happen online. In today's world, social media and online tools play an increasingly larger role in how kids socialize and learn. That's why we're celebrating Digital Citizenship Week: a week when schools and educators across the country promote digital citizenship and practice it in their (now mostly virtual) classrooms. Whether it's your first time hearing about #DigCit, or you want to get resources to participate in this year's #DigCitWeek, we have what you need to get started.
What is digital citizenship?
It's all about taking ownership of our actions online and using technology responsibly and respectfully. Being a digital citizen involves active participation in the way we think and behave online. Digital citizens think critically about the content they consume, are careful about what they share and with whom, and practice kindness, compassion, and empathy with their online communities.
How can I encourage my kid to be a digital citizen? · Students in grades K–5 can take this Digital Learning Pledge to establish a positive culture for distance learning. · Middle and high school students can sign this Digital Learning Agreement for an effective and intentional distance learning experience. · Get free activities from Wide Open School's Daily Plans for your kid. This week's plans all are focused on #DigCit. · Browse the digital citizenship activities library on Wide Open School year-round to encourage your kid to be a digital citizen anytime.
#DigCit has always been a priority at Common Sense. Our award-winning Digital Citizenship Curriculum is free and currently in 80,000 schools. If it's not already a part of your kid's learning, we encourage you to share the curriculum with their teacher and school administrators. And you can follow the #DigCitWeek hashtag on Twitter and Instagram to get more digital citizenship resources from Common Sense.
