Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, January 20th

This week I have been reading books to students about Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Friday, January 17th we will have an assembly to honor him and all he did to fight for equality and to end discrimination.

Scholastic Book Order Has Arrived!

Our library just received 132 brand new titles for our library as a result of your participation with the book fair. When you buy books our library and students benefit. It is fun to bring these new books in and see the students get excited to check them out. Thank you for shopping the book fair and supporting our school library :-)

Book Recommendations

Are we missing books you would like to read? If you wish we had a book, or book series in the library, but it is not currently here, please let us know. I created a book suggestion box for the library. It is located on the counter next to the exit doors. Simply write the title of the book, or series on a piece of paper and drop it in the box. If you include your name, I will notify you when the books are ordered so you can be the first to check them out when they become available.

Student Reporters Wanted!!

If you have something you would like to add to our newsletter, please feel free to submit a book review, helpful hint, poem, or article you would like added here. See Ms. Qualey in the library for information on how to become a reporter for the Library Legacy.

Search the Library Online

Did you know you can use our searchable database to find books in our library? Destiny offers two different ways to search. The Destiny Classic link will take you to a simple search option where you can look for a book by title, author, or key word. For a more kid friendly view, simply click on the Destiny Discover link. This option allows students to see the cover of the book, read a teaser about the book and any reviews that have been submitted. In either view, Destiny will tell you where the book is located in the library. Please stop by the library desk if you have any questions about using these databases.

Did You Know?

Did you know the library is open every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning from 8:00 until 8:25? This is an opportunity for students to check out books, sit and read quietly, visit quietly with friends, or do any of the activities provided. The only requirement...please clean up what you use before you leave. See you in the morning!

Doing Research?

Everett Public Schools provides research tools for students to use at school and at home. We have a subscription to Britannica for intermediate students, and PebbleGo for our primary students. Please use the Student Tools link from our district website, or the links on our Library Webpage to connect your student to these valuable resources.

Kerry Qualey

I have enjoyed a 20 year teaching career here at Monroe Elementary. I began as a 5th grade teacher in the 2000-2001 school year. After 11 years, I moved to second grade to work with primary students. Finally, in 2015, I took on the role as Librarian for our school. I have loved each position, all for different reasons. As a librarian, I work with students to help them find books they love, promote community and respect, and provide every child with multiple hands on learning activities (STEM) throughout the year. I love interacting with the students every day, and as a specialist, I get to see them grow over time. So far, that is my favorite thing!
