THE PIRATE POST 10-28-22

Dear Pirates,

As always, we are here for all our students and families as we enter the holiday season and the one year anniversary of the Marshall Fire. We recognize that all our LMS families and the entire Louisville and Superior community are at different stages and places, however, we are a community and are here to support each other. Please reach out if anything is needed or any resources are wanted.

Anniversaries of traumatic events, especially combined with holiday seasons, can hold a lot of emotional stress including but certainly not limited to sadness and anxiety. Although there is no one right way to heal, here are some helpful ideas:

  • Recognize and acknowledge feelings you may experience. Understand that your feelings are part of the recovery process. Give yourself permission to be at different stages in the recovery process.

  • Find healthy ways to cope with your distress. Share memories and feelings with someone you trust or just spend time with friends and family. Activities that allow your mind to focus on something other than these memories are a good coping strategy for some people. Contemplative activities like reading, thinking, or just taking a walk are also a good approach.

  • Use your support system. Reach out to family, friends, and supports at school and work.
  • Boulder County has created a Commemoration Website for those impacted by the Marshall Fire

Your vote this year affects BVSD students!

While it is always important to vote, this year there are two questions on the ballot that will directly affect BVSD students.

  • Colorado Proposition FF is a statewide proposal to fund the Healthy School Meals for All Program. The program would reimburse participating schools to provide free meals to students and provide schools with local food purchasing grants and school food-related funding. The initiative would be funded by reducing the income tax deduction amounts for those earning $300,000 or more. Learn more here.

  • Ballot Issue 5A has been referred to voters by the Boulder Valley School District Board of Education. The question asks voters to allow BVSD to increase its debt for the purpose of funding capital improvement work described in the 2022 Facilities Critical Needs Plan. The debt would be repaid through an increase in property taxes. Learn more on the BVSD website here.
