MCHS Sports Update
Marine City High School Spring sports have come to a close, and all of our teams have many accomplishments to share. The varsity baseball team started four sophomores and one freshman every game. The players were committed and did everything that was asked of them as they progressed throughout the season. The team experienced growth during the season and that, along with some talented underclassmen, will provide an opportunity for success in the upcoming seasons. Congratulations to Aren Sopfe, Alex Kelley, Kyle Wernert, and Josh Headlee for receiving All-Conference and All-District honors this season.
The Marine City J.V Softball team had a tremendous year as a team. They had 13 wins, 3 losses & 1 tie. They were undefeated in league games. Over the season Marine City out scored there opponents 195 runs to 71. It was a great season.
The MCHS softball team ended the season 17-0, placing 3rd in the MAC Blue. They fought to the finish and left it all on the field, losing in the district championship game to St. Clair in the bottom of the 7th inning.
The boys’ track team concluded a very successful season by finishing second in the league and third at Regionals. Eight athletes qualified for state finals: Justin Wiseman, Will Patsalis, Logan Brinley, Christian Mousseau, Calvin Barr, Neil McKenzie, Derek Schlottman, and Alex D’Allura. At state finals, Christian Mousseau earned sixth place in pole vault, earning All-State Honors. Forty-two boys contributed to the success of our season and eleven seniors led this team throughout the season.
The girls’ track team also had an excellent season finishing second place in the MAC blue division, the league meet, and the division three regional. We also had five individual athletes qualify in two events each for the state meet (Jessica Wright, Sam Bieth, Halie Johnson, Elizabeth Coverdill, and Jenna Zweng). To end the season, Jessica Wright became an All-State Athlete and received 8th place at the state meet by vaulting 10 feet.
MCHS Trap Team swept conference two! Our Mariners remained undefeated the entire season. The following students have qualified for states: CJ Jaronoski, Kyle Uppleger, Hunter Ketterer, Jamie Stanislawski, Jill Brown, and MaKanna Duvall. Jamie also placed 10th over all female in the state, and all of these students listed above will be headed to states in June. Great job to the entire team on all of their accomplishments and good luck to those headed to Nationals in July.
The girls’ varsity soccer team finished with a record of 12-6-3 this year. While it was a slow start, the girls picked up momentum as the season progressed. They won the annual Cros-Lex Pioneers Soccer Tournament with an undefeated record. After the tournament the girls did not lose a game until the District Finals.
Girls varsity tennis had a great season lead by 5 seniors, Rachel May, Julia Mayhew, Megan Jaworowicz, Sarah Rabine and Hayleigh Selman. After finishing 4th in dual matches in the MAC Silver the team fought and took 2nd place in the division tournament. Four players were named all conference, Abigail Dewitte, Isabelle Dewitte, Rachel May and McKenzie Cullimore.
The Marine City High School Boys' Golf Team entered the season with high expectations. Jacob Belli, Jared Bedard, and Nolan Gilbert were returning to the team for their senior seasons after excellent junior years where, along with Jarrod Belli, they won the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division dual and tournament championships. Last year the team also won the school's first ever MHSAA Regional championship. These successes put a target on the 2018 team. After several losses by just a few strokes, this year's team ended up with a 5-5 league record. In tournaments, the team took 2nd place at the Brown City Invitational, and took first place at the St. Clair County Tournament. Jacob Belli was the low individual at the Brown City Invitational, and also at MHSAA Regionals. While the team fell short of qualifying for the state finals this year, Jacob did qualify as an individual. Next year's varsity team will be full of new faces attempting to fill big shoes from a senior group that has set a new standard for Marine City Golf.
