Ms. Tharp's Recommendations of the Month
Chapter Book- Fantasy
Katherine Applegate's Crenshaw tells the story of Jackson, a ten-year-old boy who is struggling with the fact that he will soon become homeless. His father's degenerative illness is preventing him from working and the family is in the process of selling their belongings and are about to move into the family car. Crenshaw (a cat), is an imaginary friend that Jackson had as a young boy who makes a reappearance in Jackson's life as the young boy struggles with the changes happening around him. Delicately told, this story will touch readers as they see what life is like for homeless families in America. Highly recommended.
Recommended age- 3rd through 5th grade.Picture Book- Humor
In Adam Rex's XO, OX: A Love Story, Ox is completely smitten with the fair Gazelle. Unfortunately, she does not return his affections. However, Ox will not be deterred and continues to write Gazelle and praise her admirable qualities. The story consists of letters written back and forth between the two, and children will get a kick out of the fact that Ox is oblivious to Gazelle's disinterest. This book is a great choice when teaching letter writing or just for a fun read-aloud.
Recommended age- 1st- 5th grade.Chapter Book- Historical Fiction
Wolf Hollow is a beautifully told historical fiction novel set in Philadelphia just after the first World War. Annabelle attends the one-room school house in her town and everything changes in her life when a new student, Betty, arrives. Betty is a cruel person who finds joy in bullying Annabelle. Betty also begins to tell lies about Toby, a reclusive soldier who served in the war and who wanders aimlessly throughout their town, still suffering from all he experienced during the war. Annabelle struggles to understand Betty's actions but no one is prepared for what happens when Betty's lies and evil deeds catch up to all of them.
