HERSHEY NOTES

December 4, 2015

FROM MRS. FIELDS

It is official: Hershey is a “Cool School”! Thank you to all that voted for Hershey in the Macaroni Kids Contest. With your help, our entire staff won many “cool” prizes from local vendors. Visit http://lafayette.macaronikid.com/ to view a community newsletter featuring children and family friendly events scheduled in and around Tippecanoe County.

ACUITY TESTING; Grades 3-5

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will be taking the second round of Acuity at some point during the December 1 - 18 testing period. The Tippecanoe School Corporation uses this test as one way to see how ready our students are for the spring ISTEP+ examination. You are encouraged to practice skills covered on the ISTEP+ test by accessing http://acuityathome.com . This web based program will provide items selected specifically for your child based on their performance on the Acuity Test. Your child should know how to access this program; however, don’t hesitate to ask if questions arise.

MRS. LEHMAN'S UPDATES AND INFORMATION

Change Challenge: What a successful fundraiser! Hershey students brought it $1,900 for our backpack program! What a wonderful way to directly help our Hershey families. The winning class was Mrs. Anthrop, however we are all winners when helping one another. I want to thank Mrs. Seng and her volunteers for all they do for the backpack program. A special thanks to Farmer's State Bank in Battle Ground for counting all of this change! Should you need food assistance, please, don't hesitate to ask.

Wreaths Across America: Hershey Student Council took charge of our first fundraiser for Wreaths Across America. We collected $585! This will purchase 39 wreaths to be placed on DEC. 12th at the Indiana Veteran's Home. Through this donation, Student Council will also receive $200. That money can go a long way to families and students in need. Save the Date: You are invited to a public event on DEC. 12th at noon at the Indiana Veteran's Home. There will be a ceremony in MacArthur Auditorium followed by the wreath placing on the tombstone of fallen soldiers. We will have around 30 Hershey staff and families coming to assist. We hope to have 3,600 wreaths to honor each soldier this year. We will need many volunteers to place the wreaths. Please, join us for this awesome event.

Panther Postal Service: Student Council is pleased to announce that Hershey will have our own postal service. A special thanks to Mr. Tilley at McCutcheon Graphic Arts Department for creating Panther postcards for our students. Your child will receive 2 postcards to complete and send through our Panther mail service. We all LOVE to get encouraging notes from one another. The Panther Postal Service will be a service we will provide throughout the academic year.

radKIDS: I am honored to announce that Hershey will be graduating our first radKIDS class in mid-December. Ms. Williams class has worked hard to learn the necessary skills to become a radKID. We want to thank our many volunteers who have made this happen. Thank you to Buck Creek Fire Department, Tippecanoe County Deputy Beth Kohler and Mrs. Habbinga, Student Services Coordinator from Wea Ridge Elementary. Also, a special thanks to School Resource Officer Aaron Gilman and Mrs. Fields who have helped make radKIDS a success.

PTO Meeting

Mark your calendars! Miss Kathy Nimmer, finalist for National Teacher of the Year, will be speaking at our PTO meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 7:00pm. Miss Nimmer and her service dog, Nacho, visited Hershey in September, and again this week. Our students love these visits! Her message is informative and inspirational. You won’t want to miss this meeting!
