Message from Mrs. Kilday
I hope you are all well! Happy New Year to all of our families celebrating the Lunar New Year!
There are so many things that make me proud of our school and all that we do. One of those is how helpful and caring everyone is. Just this week, we had a little friend having a hard time coming in to school. Before I could gather help, several families stepped in to assist. They were so very caring and empathetic. It was wonderful to see and probably even better for the person on the receiving end. This is just one of the things that makes our school such a great place!
Thank you everyone.
Donna

New Curriculum Theme!
This week we will begin our Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes theme. We love this theme not only because it has lots of opportunities to develop early literacy skills, but we also find fun ways to incorporate early math and STEAM activities (building houses, making bridges). Some of the early literacy skills we work on when reading fairy tales include story recall, identifying the “characters”, “setting” and “problem” in the story, and sequencing and retelling the plot of the story. We also have books that might be a variation of the original story which helps develop understanding of “same” and “different”. During nursery rhymes we spend a lot of time on rhyming which is an important phonemic awareness skill. Children may be at varying levels with this and we meet them where they are. Some students may be working on rhyme awareness when hearing rhyming words while others might be able to identify 2 words that rhyme in a group of three. We also have students who can make their own rhyming words.
Some of the fairy tales your child’s classroom reads might include: The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Princess and the Pea. They may also learn some of these nursery rhymes: “Humpty Dumpty”, “Little Miss Muffet”, “Hey Diddle Diddle”, “Hickory, Dickory, Dock”, and “Jack Be Nimble”. It is great carryover to be reading or saying these at home, too!
Celebrating Diversity
You can look for the hearts in the hallway near the map of the world that we will be hanging up as well! This map will be used to see where our families are from. More details to come! We are excited to see your responses!
Kindness in the Preschool
Kindness Counts initiative:
Although we frequently try to capture and encourage “acts of kindness”
throughout our daily preschool experiences, we will be starting a program wide
“kindness counts” initiative beginning January 30 th . Each classroom will have a
bucket that will be filled up with pom poms every time we notice acts of kindness
in the classroom. Examples could be helping a friend, sharing, using kind words,
showing empathy towards others, compromising during play, volunteering to help
with classroom tasks, etc.
Each time the classroom bucket gets filled, the students will help pour the pom
poms into a large container that will be located in the hallway. When that
container is full, we will celebrate in a special way that is yet to be determined.
Enhancing awareness of kindness and empathy is something that we are always
striving to do!
