News from Arbor View Elementary School: October 8, 2021
Arbor View families:
During the week of October 18, our school’s social worker, Kim Wankel, will be visiting all classrooms for the annual Erin’s Law presentation. Illinois school districts are required to provide age-appropriate Erin’s Law lessons to all students from preschool to eighth grade. The goal of this presentation is to help children feel empowered to report problems.
The Erin’s Law presentations will focus on keeping our bodies safe and how others should respect your personal space. Students will practice saying ‘no’ to anyone who is not respecting their body, and how to report the incident. Students will be asked to think of trusted adults in their life they could talk to if they felt someone was making inappropriate comments or physical touching. Younger students will hear the book “Your Body Belongs to You” and discuss its meaning.
The social worker does the Erin’s Law presentation one time during each school year. Guardians have the option to withdraw a student from a unit of instruction by sending written notice to Arbor View principal Emily Burnett.
If you have any questions about the content of the presentation, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Wankel.

Parking on Birchwood Drive
Our neighbors need your help in being able to move through our community's streets at the end of the school day. Several families have contacted the district about people parking on side streets at pick-up time.
In particular: on Birchwood Drive, cars are parking on both sides of the street to wait for students. While it is legal to park on both sides, it makes it very difficult for drivers to navigate an already narrow street between two lanes of parked vehicles from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. There have been some near misses with cars backing out of driveways and students cutting between parked cars.
If possible, I encourage you to pick up your children from the car line at the school. If you went to that line at the beginning of the year and found it too slow, please give it a try again. The process moves quite quickly now; all of the cars are cleared by 3:45 p.m. Thank you for your help!
Art Smart
The October Art Smart Challenge is the “Kuba Mukenga Mask” made by the Kuba People of Zaire, Africa.
The Kuba people made the mask in between the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The mask was used in tribal ceremonies to honor deceased leaders or important guests. The mask is an extraordinary work of skill and craftsmanship, created from materials found in the region that represented important aspects of their culture. You can see this mask in all its splendor at the Art Institute of Chicago. We can’t wait to see the amazing mask designs the students create this month!

Students should bring two masks to school each day
Please have your student bring two masks with them to school each day. Bus drivers are reporting that more students are showing up without a mask. Students can be given a mask when they board the bus or arrive at school, but those supplies are limited. A second mask is essential in case the first mask breaks, tears, or is soiled.
Families must check their children’s health each day. Do not send your student to school if they are positive for COVID-19, have COVID-19 symptoms, or have been in contact with someone who is COVID-19 positive. Use this chart (https://bit.ly/3jyrv3y) to determine if your student needs quarantine or isolation. School nurses or your doctor can answer questions.
