BSD Best Practices - Phishing and Scams
Phishing is the most common method criminals use to get into systems. Just a few weeks ago, a district in Washington was completely locked out of all of their systems due to ransomware introduced by a staff member clicking a fake link and giving criminals their username and password. https://www.forbes.com/sites/leemathews/2019/09/25/yet-another-u-s-school-district-has-been-ravaged-by-malware/#6be8f5621a99
Here are some tips to protect our BSD systems so we do not fall prey to this attack: Always be suspicious: Criminals are better at making phishing emails look real. Take the time to check the From: address. Phishes also typically have an “urgent” need to tempt you to log into a site, which gives them your username and password. Forward to IT: If you suspect a message is a phish, it probably is! Forward the message to phishing@beaverton.k12.or.us and we will take a look for you. If it is a phish and you let us know, we can better protect our systems and remove it from mailboxes if it was sent to many staff. Verify: If you receive an email from a BSD staff that you think might not be real, call their direct BSD phone number and ask. If you are sending anything that might cause staff to think your message might not be real, send a short email first letting them know what to expect. Be extra cautious asking for payroll or purchasing information: These emails have been very successful, which means more criminals will try them. One example is a request from your building principal saying they need you to purchase iTunes cards for an “urgent” need. Review these great resources on phishing and protecting your identity:
Honors Diploma Applicants
Senior students interested in earning the Westview Honors Diploma in the spring must get their Service Learning applications approved before counting hours. The deadline for turning in Service Learning applications is Friday, November, 8th. Please see Mrs. Ferris in the Upper North Teacher Cluster for an application.
Community this Week
Chetana Foundation
Chetana is a non-profit organization with a mission to spread happiness through service to the community. Helping people from all walks of life regardless of race, religion, income-level, culture, and political beliefs is a key objective for Chetana volunteers who actively undertake a variety of social welfare programs. For example, volunteers cook and serve delicious meals at local shelters for the homeless, specifically those run by Transition Projects. Another Chetana project is packaging food at the Oregon Food Bank on a weekly basis. Each session is sponsored by a volunteer family, which helps pay for food ingredients and packaging supplies, and even delivers the food to a homeless shelter.
Other projects include food-drives, education programs, clothe-drives, Adopt-a-Road, planting trees, kids coloring for Fighting Pretty, backpacks for underprivileged students, water bottles for homeless shelters, college events, promoting healthy initiatives, supporting retirement homes, fundraiser brunches, helping athletes, disaster relief, disability support, and alleviating poverty in India. Both adults, as well as minors, are part of Chetana’s corps of over 300 volunteers.
Congratulations to Shishira Adusumilli, Sahith Chandra, Rishitha Chandra, Sri Vaishnavi Sarpana Chandu, Aneesha Mahindraker, Bhavika Buddi, Akhil Vemuri, Tarun Narahari, Akshata Jha, Maanasa Pulavarty, Vignesh Bhaskar and Sreenija Muduganti,
Sree Adusumilli did 306 hours of volunteering in a year and achieved Golden Presidential Award.
Technology
Happy Sunday Staff! This week's newsletter brings you some more super cool information (http://bit.ly/stafftechnews20 ). Want to explore more in your classroom? I am always happy to come teach a model lesson, give you a one on one walk through, or help with a quick email. AND, feel free to stop by S216 on Thursdays between 2:30p-3p for Canvas and technology drop in help. Weekly topics to come.:
Chrome Reboot...and what to do
It has just come to our attention that the district is running some Chromebook updates that may erase all downloads, screenshots, photos, and app files saved locally to your Chromebook.
If you have critical files that are currently saved only on your Chromebook, be sure to copy them over to your Google Drive as backup as soon as possible. Files saved to your Google Drive will not be deleted, but files saved only on the Chromebook may be.
To make sure you never lose a file:
1. Review downloaded files often and save, if needed, but know they could be automatically deleted.
2. Have ALL downloads automatically saved to Drive
a. In GoogleDrive, make a folder called 'Downloads'
b. On your Chromebook, Go to Settings / Advanced / Downloads / Location / and change location to Google
Drive/Downloads
3. Turn on the setting: Ask where to save each file before downloading so you can choose
a. Go to Settings / Advanced / Downloads / then turn on “Ask where to save each file before downloading”

bit.lyt/How do you make customized short links?
Sometimes you run into a moment when you can’t use a hyperlink...but you don’t want students or staff to have to enter a long url into their browser. That’s where bit.ly (and other URL shorteners like it) come into play. Create a free account, and in a few short moments you can create customized links to anyplace you’d like someone to go. For a quick walk-through in under 30 secs, watch this video.
Syngery Comments and ‘N’
Did you try to enter Synergy comments into the gradebook only to have them erased for all kids who had not submitted work and received an ‘N’? Watch this quick video to update your Synergy settings.
WHS Makerspace S216
Have a project coming up, and want to let students know of a place where they can have materials to create? We not only received a grant last year to purchase some great project making tools, but we have also had a number of generous donations from crafters that have given up crafting...in other words, we have fancy paper, paper cutters, stickers, a BUTTON MAKER!!!, and more. I have to admit, it isn’t all organized, but it is a work in progress. Please let me know if you need something.

Reminders
Inclement Weather Procedures
When the weather gets snowy or icy, school schedules may be affected. The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:15 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability for employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
Inclement weather procedures for staff are posted on the Public Safety Intranet page.
The District will notify parents and staff via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.
For the latest inclement weather information:
Log on to the District website and a page pop will be posted in the middle of the main page with the status of District operations.
