Weekly Update

October 4, 2020

Big picture

Patriot Band:

Great job at our first game! Students handled all of the logistics of a football game with all of the added safety guidelines very well and performed well in the stands and on the field. This week is the fall intersession, so we won't have normal classes, but we will have marching band rehearsals. There is a football game this Friday and we have a bunch more of the show to learn!

A Note About Uniforms and Gear:

The polos that were delivered to us this year have an error in the embroidery. The company that supplies our polos has sent us new polos with the correct design. All students who received a new polo this year will need to exchange the polo they were given last week for the corrected polo. The boosters will be at our rehearsals Tuesday and Wednesday from 6-7pm to exchange polos and distribute any new orders that students may need to pick up.

For the next several games, the band will wear their polo and khaki shorts or blue jeans depending on the weather. This week's game looks warmer so we will wear khaki shorts. By the time the weather is much cooler and we get closer to contest, we will fit and distribute full band uniforms.

The next eligibility check (opportunity to regain and/or chance to lose eligibility) will be determined by the first 9 week report card that ended October 2nd. This eligibility check will determine student participation in UIL marching and Region Band auditions as well as any football games 4-8.

Teachers have this week to grade assignments and update their gradebooks. As soon as grades are finalized, we will discuss eligibility with any students who may have lost it.

ALL students are eligible for our first two football games because they occur during the fall intersession.

Snap! Raise Fundraiser

Look for an email this week with instructions for our upcoming fundraiser. Snap! Raise is an online fundraiser that utilizes email and social media to gather donations for our band program. This is our biggest and best fundraiser of the year and we are excited to get it started!

If you have any specific questions or concerns, please email Mr. Hudler.

The easiest and preferred payment method for safety purposes is to pay through Skyward. If need be, payments can be made by cash or check in the band hall. Checks must be made payable to "LCHS" with "Band Fees" and student ID # in the memo line.

Big picture

Students will ride buses to and from football games. For safety, buses will only be filled to half capacity. Buses will will only have 23 students and 1 chaperone with one person per seat. Students will submit a symptom screen and have their temperature checked before entering the bus.

Uniforms and Gear

For the first few games, students will wear their "summer" uniform. Students will wear their black LC Band polo along with either blue jeans or khaki shorts depending on the weather. The weather for this week's game looks like it will be warmer. This week students will wear khaki shorts with their polo. Shorts need to be an appropriate length to meet school dress code policy. Students will also need to have the following required gear:

  • Water Jug w/ koozie - completely filled with water.

  • Band-issued blue rain poncho.

  • Flip Folder and lyre (not purchased through the boosters)

  • LC Band face mask - a gift to our students from the boosters!

Chaperone and Volunteer Needs

For student safety, GISD has limited the number of parent chaperones and volunteers that we will be able to have, but we still need your help! For each of our games this year, we will need 6 bus chaperones, two box truck drivers and a few parents to help in the student parking lot. Please remember that any adult who wishes to help out will need to go through the GISD volunteer process.

Please follow this link to sign up to help.

Stadium Entry for Chaperones, Volunteers, and Spectators

Due to capacity limits, tickets will not be sold for GISD football games this season. The only way to attend any of our football games will be to use specially issued punch cards. This also applies to our volunteers and chaperones. Each student who is participating in the marching band this year will be given a single punch card that will admit 2 people into the stadium. These punch cards should be distributed this week once we receive them from GISD Athletics. Communication will be sent out to parents the day these passes are distributed. Once the punch cards are handed out, students need to give them to their parents/guardians. After they are handed out, the band staff cannot replace them if they are lost or misplaced. We will only be given one per student from GISD Athletics. Please also remember that any adults attending the game will also need to adhere to GISD's clear bag policy.

Pick-up After the Game

When the band has loaded buses and departed to return to LC, an announcement will go out through Remind101. Parents/Guardians, please make sure you have signed up for the Remind101 group for your student:

  • Freshman -- text @frshbnd21 to 81010
  • Sophomore -- text @sophbnd21 to 81010
  • Junior -- text @jrband21 to 81010
  • Senior -- text @srbnd21 to 81010

DO NOT PARK OR STOP in any of the bus or fire lanes to pick up your student. This is a safety and legal issue for our students and volunteers. The student parking lot gets very busy after games and contests. Buses and box trucks need clear paths to drop off students and equipment and students need clear, safe paths to get to their rides. Please park in a parking space and wait for your student to come to you. This will help ensure that students are picked up safely and will be much faster for everybody if all travel lanes are kept clear.

More Important Information:

Marching Band Attendance Policy

Attendance at all marching rehearsals is critical for safe and effective performances. For this reason, it is the policy of the Patriot Band that students who have an unexcused absence from a marching rehearsal will not be allowed to participate in that week's football game. Absences will be excused for the same reasons the school might excuse an absence such as illness or family emergency. Absences must be communicated by email to Mr. Hudler in order to be excused. Communication must be from a parent or guardian.

Whenever possible, we will keep Wednesdays clear for students to take care of tutorials, doctor's appointments, work, driver's training, etc. The band calendar has been updated to reflect this schedule for the next several weeks.

Band Website and Calendar

Find the official band calendar on the home page of our band website. We encourage families and students to sync the band calendar to your personal calendar to help keep track of our busy schedule.

Band Grades

For all band classes, students are expected to log into Canvas and join us for live meetings through Google Meets at the scheduled time for their class. If students do not attend the Google Meets and perform their assigned materials, they will not get credit and will receive a zero for their grade. We understand that there are occasionally internet connection problems. This is why we have dedicated our Friday classes every week to make-up performance opportunities for students who missed a performance or who would like to reattempt a performance for a higher score.

Our performance grades are evaluated using a mastery learning model. Students have multiple opportunities to perform and improve material until it is mastered. We use a very specific rubric to evaluate student performances. Scores are divided into three ranges and grades are based on those ranges. (Yellow= 60%, White= 80%, Blue= 100%) A copy of the rubric is attached for reference.

Class Attendance

We make announcements and take attendance in the first 10 minutes of each Google Meet. If a student logs on late, they will have been marked absent. It will be the responsibility of the student to reach out to correct attendance. To have attendance corrected, students should find the "magic button" on their canvas course home page which will take them to a Google Form they can fill out to request a correction.

Fees should now be available for payment through Skyward. Because of current circumstances, we have reduced the fees to only the Band Operations Fee of $200 for all members of the program and the Instrument Usage Fee of $100 for students who use school-owned instruments. (These fees do not include items such as uniform pieces which are purchased from the Band Boosters.) Fees can be paid electronically through Skyward, or by cash or check in the band office.

Because this new fee process has taken more time than anticipated, we are adjusting the payment schedule as follows:

September 15th - $75

October 15th - $75

November 16th - $75

December 15th - $75 or remaining balance

*A note about fees owed from previous years: Those fees will be paid through the boosters, not through skyward. Past due fees can be paid by cash or checks made out to be boosters or through the CutTime system used last year.

Required Forms

ALL MEMBERS of the Patriot Band must have our these forms on file, regardless of plans to participate in in-person activities. Please submit these forms ASAP. If you have not completed or received these forms, they are now available at this link: Required Forms

(It is okay to sign for your student.)

Private Lessons

We strongly encourage all members of the band to take advantage of private lesson opportunities this year. Lessons are incredibly beneficial to every student from Concert Band to the Wind Ensemble. They help students grow and improve individually, which is the best and fastest way for our band to grow and improve as an organization. This week the band staff will be reaching out to families who expressed interest in private lessons to help set them up and answer any questions. More information about private lessons can be found on our band website along with student applications and contact information for our amazing private lessons staff.
