MacArthur Elementary School
November 27, 2019
Notes from the Principal
Dear MacArthur Families,
With Thanksgiving upon us we each have so much to be thankful for. I encourage each of you to try and find the positives of your day. So much of life is about perspective and keeping a positive perspective can make all the difference. Just a few things this week we are thankful for here at MacArthur School.
- Congratulations to Mrs. Wenglarz, for being named a finalist for the “Inspiring Educator Award” presented by the Crossroads Chamber of Commerce. She, along with several other Crown Point teachers, were honored over the weekend at a formal dinner event at the Avalon. MacArthur is very blessed to have Mrs. Wenglarz on our team, positively impacting students’ lives.
- Our Student Ambassadors and Carnahan Helpers for organizing our November Food Drive. Our school collected 1, 373 pounds of food to our local food pantry called, Project Love.
- Joe Scorson for providing our students with a great assembly called, “Take Your Voice Back”. The key message of this assembly was to teach the students to not be afraid to ask for help. Interesting enough, Joe himself, had to be willing to ask for and accept help later that evening when his family and him were stranded in their RV in front of the Boys and Girls Club. It was truly amazing how our community came to their aide and helped them.
- Our Kindergarten parents who helped provide our Kindergarten students with a delicious and interesting Thanksgiving Feast. I didn’t realize popcorn, jello, and cookies were part of the original Thanksgiving. Lol
Also, during our LEAD Team time our students wrote what they were thankful for, so I hope you enjoy reading several of them below. I hope you and your families have a very blessed Thanksgiving.
Have a Great Weekend.

“Vegetable of the Month”
Sweet Potato
Did you know that sweet potatoes are only distantly related to potatoes? Non-sweet potatoes (red, white and gold) are actually part of the edible nightshade family, whereas sweet potatoes are root tubers like beets and carrots. While white potatoes are lower in fat and sugar, sweet potatoes have fewer carbs and calories. Sweet potatoes are also rich in vitamin C&B as well as potassium and fiber, and also help maintain a healthy blood pressure and protect against cancer. We will be sampling sweet potato French Fries this month during our lunches.
Roasted Sweet Potatoes
Chop your sweet potatoes into 2 inch pieces
Spread out in a single layer on a sheet pan
Season with garlic, olive oil, melted butter, salt and pepper to taste
Bake at 425 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until tender and golden brown
Garnish with fresh parsley
