Pre-K Programs
English Language Arts
In kindergarten, students will focus on phonemic awareness, specifically ending sounds. In phonics, this includes R- Blends and S- Blends. Students will continue to develop reading comprehension by retelling a story and identifying key events using literary texts, including Rooster Off to See the World. Texts such as My Lucky Day will be used to support students with identifying characters, settings and major events in a story. They will ask and answer questions about unknown words in text to further develop vocabulary skills. Texts to support this are One Little Mouse and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Providing opportunities for students to engage in Accountable Text Talk helps students clarify thinking by reinforcing the ability to build and demonstrate knowledge, as well as identifying any misconceptions they might have.
In first grade, students will focus on decoding multisyllabic words through the introduction of Decoding Skills 1 & 2. Successful demonstration of these skills provides opportunities for students to access higher text complexity. Students will continue to develop reading comprehension by using illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events when reading literary text, such as A Place to Play. Students will compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories using the text, Ruby in Her Own Time. Increasing students’ abilities to ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text will be a continued focus. Reading Frog and Toad Together will provide opportunities for students to continue to develop their understanding of this standard. Students will work with informational text, The Class Pet, to identify the main topic and retell key details of a text . Incorporating student talk structures such as Hand Up, Pair Up allows students to think and speak about grade level text and listen to the perspectives of others.
In second grade, students will focus on building phonics skills, which become more complex due to a concentration on Murmur Diphthongs, Prefixes and Suffixes, and additional work with Digraphs. This is an exciting time of year, as you will start observing students automatically apply phonics in reading and writing. Students will continue developing their reading comprehension by acknowledging differences in points of view of characters, including speaking in different voices for each character when reading dialogue aloud by reading literary text, such as A Froggy Fable. Students will describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action using the text, The Night the Moon Fell. When focused on informational text, the students will know and use various text features to locate facts or information in a text efficiently. Reading Life Cycle of a Pumpkin will provide opportunities for students to grow in this standard. Incorporating student talk structures such as Quiz-Quiz-Trade allows students to think and speak about grade level text and listen to the perspectives of others.
ELL Connections:
In order to promote comprehension for EL (ALL!) students, teachers need to give students opportunities to speak using academic language. Below are the “The GO TO Strategies: Scaffolding Options for Teachers of English Language Learners, K-12” for speaking. These strategies were chosen because of their usefulness in helping teachers scaffold content for language input.
For Entering EL students, Choral Reading includes learners in the classroom conversation.
For Emerging EL students, Think-Pair-Share-Squared encourages students to speak with other students.
For Developing EL students, Collaborative Dialogues between the teacher and student promote academic language through strategies such as repeat, recast, reformulate, and prompt.
ALL Students can begin to give oral reports at this level if scaffolding is provided. Allow use of note cards and opportunities to practice the presentation beforehand.
ALL Students can participate in academic debates on various viewpoints. Scaffold by providing Graphic Organizers or Outlines.
Open Office Hours for teachers grades K – 5 Monday, February 1, 2021, 8:30-11:30 and 12:30-3:30. https://colliercountyschools.webex.com/meet/pikeam
Mathematics
In kindergarten, students will use counting and matching strategies to compare numbers up to ten. They will identify whether the number of objects within 10 in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group by using reasoning, matching, and counting strategies. Students will also represent add to and take from problems within ten using objects or drawings. Creating visual representations helps students relate to the quantities in the problem and builds an understanding of the relationship between the numbers and signs used when writing equations.
In first grade, students will use place value concepts to decompose numbers into tens and ones. They will count and represent numbers to 120 and compare two two-digit numbers using the symbols >, =, and <. It is important that students distinguish the symbols, and understand that these symbols can be used to express the same inequality. For example,
74 > 22 and 22 < 74 mean the same thing. Switching the symbols and the position of the number that is greater and the number that is less supports developing this understanding.
In second grade, students will represent the unknown number in addition and subtraction problems and fluently add and subtract within 100. They will use knowledge of basic facts, two-digit addition, and place value to build an understanding for addition of three-digit numbers.
Resource:
CPALMS Original Student Tutorials include student centered interactive online lessons aligned to grade level MAFS. The tutorials provide opportunities for practice and review of math concepts. The tutorials along with additional resources are available on www.FloridaStudents.org.
Science
In kindergarten, students will be able to understand that the shape of materials can be changed and that objects move in different ways. In addition, they will be able to understand that a push or a pull can change the way an object is moving.
In first grade, students will be able to understand the Law of Gravity by demonstrating that Earth's gravity pulls any object on or near Earth toward it even though nothing is touching the object. They will be able to observe and discuss that there are more stars in the sky than anyone can easily count and that stars are not scattered evenly in the sky. They will understand how magnifiers make things appear bigger and help people see things they could not see without them. Finally, students will begin the unit on rocks and soil to understand that water, rocks, soil and living organisms are found on Earth’s surface.
In second grade, students will review units of study from 1st grade quarter 4 (see link below.) The units of study include living and non-living things, basic needs, plant parts, and plants and animals. These reviews are necessary, as students might have missed this critical content last spring.
- Grade 1 Review Units for second graders (Scroll to Quarter 4 Content).
- Students will be able to recognize, explain, and compare/contrast that living things are found all over Earth and only able to live in habitats that meet basic needs.

February Curriculum Highlights
Monthly Digital Citizenship focus (incorporate into daily instruction) – Media Literacy – even our youngest students need to understand that not everything they read/see on the internet is true and that they can look to particular resources that they can depend on for information. Guide students to our CCPS subscription resources for their research projects and discuss what makes them valid, reliable sources of information.

The NEW Rich Content Editor
The New Rich Content Editor is an update to the previous Canvas Rich Content Editor. It provides a condensed, more intuitive toolbar that is grouped by common icons and interactions. The new editor started January 16 and applies to both students and teachers. Here is a LINK to a video on the New Rich Content Editor.
PowerPoint Subtitles/Closed Caption
Whether you are teaching young children that are learning to read, students with hearing impairments, or those that are acquiring the English language, a powerful new tool in PowerPoint can help support their needs. PowerPoint now includes a feature called subtitles. Utilizing a microphone on your computer, you simply speak and PPT adds your words in written text. Select a foreign language and it will translate it too. Simple and powerful! Click here for the demo.
School Counseling/Social Emotional Learning
District SEL Theme for February: Social Awareness
Social Awareness is the ability to understand the perspectives of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and contexts. This includes the capacity to feel compassion for others, understand social norms for behavior in different settings, recognize strengths in others, show concern for the feelings of others, and understand and express gratitude.
A key component of social awareness is the ability to show kindness. During Random Acts of Kindness Week (and throughout the month and year), encourage your on-campus and virtual students to make the world a better place by performing kindness acts such as:
- Waving or smiling at others
- Saying, “Good morning” to 10 people
- Holding the door open for someone
- Socializing with someone new
- Sincerely complimenting 5 people
- Saying, “Thank you” to a bus driver/crossing guard/cafeteria worker/plant operator/parent
- Helping a younger student/sibling/neighbor
- Picking up trash outside their school or neighborhood
“Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.”
