Heroes and Epics of Today
Part 1: Epic
An epic is a long narrative poem that is written in an elevated style where heroes of historical and legendary importance perform amazing deeds. Epics also usually include a plot that has superhuman events in it. My first example of an epic is when
Beowulf fights Grendel. This event shows an example of superhuman strength. My first quote that shows an epic is when Beowulf is described in the poem as "That mighty protector of men meant to hold the monster till it's life leaped out." pg. 52 Another example is when Beowulf snapped Grendel's arm off. The scene is described saying that "He twisted in pain, And the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke." pg. 53 My last example that show this story is an epic is when Beowulf fights Grendel's mother. Before the fight occurs Beowulf jumps into the lake to go and find Grendel's mother. This shows an example of superhuman strength and an epic because no ordinary human being could do such a thing. The scene is described "He leaped into the lake, would not wait for anyone's Answer; the heaving water covered him over." pg. 57
