Mar Vista Parent Newsletter
Week of January 25, 2021
I want to give a huge thank you to parent volunteer Kate Pavao and the Live Like Coco Foundation for the awesome birthday books distributed just before Winter Break! I hope they brought smiles to our students' faces and warmth to their hearts. Please see more info below on how you can support this generous foundation:
The Live Like Coco Foundation, a non- profit focused on helping Santa
Cruz County kids grow up healthy, and with opportunities to pursue
their dreams, donates more than 6,000 brand new books to elementary
school students at 12 local schools, including Mar Vista. To learn
more about the foundation, and it's inspiration, Coco Lazenby, please
Please remember that our School Picture Days will take place on Monday, January 25 for TK-2nd grade students and Monday, February 1st for grades 3-6. We ask that families come at the following times to evenly distribute student arrivals and avoid lines. If the time frame doesn't work for you, it is okay to choose another time. Please see the following timeframes and thanks for your help!
Monday January, 25:
TK and Kindergarten 12:00-1:30
1st grade 1:30-3:00
2nd grade 3:00-4:30
Monday, February 1:
3rd grade 12:30-2:00
4th grade 2:00-3:00
5th grade 3:00-4:00
6th grade 4:00-5:00
Also, siblings may attend either date, if that helps families. Photos will be taken outdoors with COVID-19 protocols in place. Please park, wear your masks and wait at the marked areas to be called down for your child's photo. The photos will be taken outside of the main office. All visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before approaching the photo area. Do not come to the school if you and/or your child are showing COVID symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID within the past two weeks.
Roadwork on Soquel Drive has moved to the south so cars should now be able to turn left from the center lane. If you are traveling north and notice there are trucks blocking the lane, please continue to Cabrillo College Drive to make a safe U-turn. Thanks for your patience during the public works project!
Have a wonderful week!
Mr. J's Academic Coordinator Update
Students will be continuing Unit 4 in our language arts curriculum, Benchmark, this week. This unit generally focuses on narrative stories and how perspectives/points of view shape these stories.
The science fair looks quite a bit different this year, and due to the structure of distance learning, it is not being required for 4th-6th graders. It is still encouraged for those students wishing to participate, and they can still submit their projects directly to the county fair this year. You can find more information about that here: https://ca-scc.zfairs.com/?f=760d2abd-97bf-4923-871c-a48fb3af0565
Please note, the deadline for registration is March 1st.
We will have science fair boards for anyone that wishes to participate, please just reach out to me and we can set something up.

They purchased Zearn for us and I have to say it has been a HUGE support for my math program. I also appreciate the $400 classroom funds because I have been purchasing chapter book sets for my class. I also really appreciate Ashley continuing on being treasurer with her full time job. -Miss Risa
