VOCABULARY
Lesson 1 Vocabulary
Decimal fraction – a fraction expressed with a denominator of ten or a power of ten. For example, 110.
Decimal number – indicates any number written with a decimal point. For example, 0.038.
Decimal point – a point used to separate whole and decimal numbers with those to the right of the point having a value of less than one; the point is read as the word “and”
Decimal system – a system that uses a base-ten place value system with multiples of tenths to represent a number. For example, 5.26, 0.04 or 0.3.
Hundredths – the place value position identified as one hundredth (1100) of the unit that is the second place to the right of the decimal point. For example, 0.381.
Place value – the value of a digit depending on its place in a number. For example, the value of the 4 in 2.47 is 4 tenths, while the value of the 4 in 427 is 4 hundreds.
Tenths – the place value position identified as one tenth (110) of the unit, which is the first place to the right of the decimal point. For example, 0.381.
Thousandths – the place value position identified as one thousandth (11,000) of the unit, which is the third place to the right of the decimal point. For example, 0.381.
Lesson 1 Objectives
Objectives
Students will demonstrate an understanding of decimal place value relationships.
Students will use number lines to illustrate and establish a relationship between fractions with denominators of powers of 10 and decimals.
Students will create pictorial representations for decimals.
Students will use base-ten blocks to represent decimal values.
Students will rename decimals in multiple ways.
Students will use common benchmarks and greater than/less than symbols to compare decimal numbers expressed in tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.
This Week We Will
- Share If math were a fruit activity
- Bell Ringer and Skills Practice
- Practice renaming decimals, writing in expanded form, compare decimals up to thousandths
