The VoiCE
April 2017
A Note From Principal Miller
Dear CE Families,
As I type for this month's issue, the Blizzard of 2017 is coming down fast and furious. Let's hope April brings signs of spring and warmer temperatures. I long to get outside more and feel the sun on my face. Since we used our allotted snow days, we will need to make up those days later in the year. NYS Law mandates that there are 180 of student attendance days. The Board of Education has approved April 14th as a day students will be in session. We will come in for a half day, 11:30 dismissal. Buses will leave the lot at 11:45 a.m.
Busy Month Ahead. Here are the highlights:
- April 11th: BOE Budget Workshop (if needed) CE @ 6:30 p.m.
- April 14th: Half-Day, 11:30 a.m. Dismissal. (Make Up Snow Day); LUNCH WILL BE SERVED
- April 17th - 21st: Spring Recess
- April 24th - 28th: CE PTO Book Fair
- April 26th: Book Auction at EJA, 6 p.m., A great way to build your home library. Proceeds support our elementary libraries.
- April 28th: Annual Art Show and PTO Ice Cream Social
- April 30th: Bus Drivers' Appreciation Day
New Motto: Say NO to SNOW!

It was a Who’s Who of people from history!
CE’s first Wax Museum was held on March 17th. Each third grader chose the biography of a famous person from history, from George Washington to Rachael Ray. Students then read to learn more about why their person was famous and learned about important contributions to the world. Timelines and poems were created in class, and at home students created poster displays and crafted costumes and artifacts. The students had to ‘come alive’ when they were approached by an audience member, and they did an amazing job explaining why these historical figures were important. Great fun was had by all!

CE Library Nature Museum
April usually means warmer spring weather. It feels great to get outside, see those fresh green buds and hear all manner of bird song. It’s also the month we celebrate the Earth and think about how to take care of it. What better time to create a small nature museum in the Library!
CE students will help create this museum for the 2nd year in a row. I have asked that they keep their eyes open when they’re outside at home, to look for interesting things that can be shared with the whole school, for example, a rock with fossils or a bird feather. Students are often happy to share a collection of theirs so this is an opportunity to bring in one item and start a conversation with friends about their hobby.
Students may bring their items to the Library during Library class or at the end of the day from Tuesday through Friday. All objects that are added to the museum will be labeled and returned to students when the museum closes towards the end of the school year. There will be assorted identification books available to students who want to look up more about their find. *Just no living things, please!
Because April is also National Poetry Month, spending time outside and seeing the neat objects in the museum may be just the inspiration students need to create their own poems.
Thank you in advance for supporting your child(ren)’s interest and participation in growing the CE Library museum collection. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email at spatarob@cacsd.org ~Mrs. Spataro
