Personal Biography
Jonas Salk was born October 28, 1914, in New York City. He received his bachelor's degree in science at the City College of New York. Jonas then went to the University of Michigan. He established the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in 1963. In 1968 he married Donna Lindsay, they had three boys: Peter, Darrell, and Jonathan. Then in 1970 he married Francoise Gilot. He then died in 1995.
Scientific Biography
Jonas then in 1942 joined a group to create a vaccine against the flu. In 1947 he became head of the Virus Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, while he was there he researched polio. He created a vaccine fro polio while at that school. That was one of the largest clinical trials in medical history because it took over 2 years. On April 12, 1955, the vaccine was able to be used in the U.S.
Virology
The definition of virology is the branch of science that deals with viruses. This deals with Salk's works due to the fact that he worked with the polio virus and had to come up with a vaccination.This branch of science deals with today's life because there are many viruses that are in our world. Luckily there have been cures for some of them due to scientists in the branch of virology.
