PK3.3 News - Pets
11th - 15th April 2016
What kind of animal lives in a nest?
This week our pet study was all about where pets live. By asking questions such as " which is the best type of home for this pet?, what is the natural habitat for this animal? and what does our classroom pet need in her habitat?" we were able to identify what animals need to survive and what pets need to keep them safe.
The children are really enjoying this study and are so engaged during our question times. We are having such wonderful discussions about enclosures, habitats and the needs of animals.
Mystery Reader and Birthday Celebrations with Maria
This week we wish Maria a very happy 4th birthday!
Maria's family joined us on Thursday to celebrate......but wait! First, we had a surprise. A mystery reader! Maria's dad had brought The Mine-o-saur by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen to read to us.
A sweet story of a dinosaur who doesn't want to share. "Mine, mine, mine!" he shouts as he takes toys and steals all the scones and butter tarts. Eventually everyone is a little fed up and they don't want to play with him any more. How can the Mine-o-saur make amends?
After such a great story about sharing it was time to share delicious birthday cupcakes and treats! Happy Birthday Maria!
what have we been singing this week?
This week we have been having fun doing all the things that rabbits do.....hopping, wiggling our noses, flopping our ears and shaking our cotton tails!
We also played around with different types of animal movement as we sang: "ohh dear what can the matter be, everyone's moving like........dogs/cats/fish/rabbits" . The children got really creative, especially the fish! Glub glub!
Same Sound Sort
In literacy we have been exploring alliteration - words that begin with the same sound. We began by sorting different items into groups of the same sound. Here the children are sorting T and B
Later we played sound bingo where the children identified the images on the bingo mat and matched it to the correct beginning sound of T and F.
In the garden.......
......PK3 have been planting and tending onions. Ms Sharon explained that they would be planting a different type of onion (a spring onion or scallion) to the big onions that were growing. They discovered that they had a similar smell and belonged to the same family.
In other garden areas PK3 explored water activities and building with natural wood blocks.
In art class...........
There was also lots of this............
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Next week is Earth Week
Earth Day is Friday 22nd April and here in PK3 we have a whole week of activities planned to engage and educate our students about reducing, reusing and recycling. We want to include you too and ask for your help with the following:
Tuesday 19th Recycle Show and Tell:
Our kids are really excited about turning anything into something else or something new. There are tons of things to make out of recycled material and we want to get you involved in our Earth Week with a Home-School connection activity. We encourage you to create a fun and easy game, toy, instrument, etc. Help your kids create anything they want related with colors, numbers and shapes using all recycled materials. There are so many ideas you can use: bottle caps, plastic bottles, toilet paper rolls, even a pringles can!
The idea is for each child to “Show and Tell” their creations in class, and we will place them in our Toys & Games Center for the rest of the class to use. If you can send it on Tuesday 19th that would be great!
Friday 22nd April – EARTH DAY:
