Hello Tigers!

Mark Twain is quoted, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started." We are certainly on our way, as it is an honor and joy to witness the intricate process of teaching and learning that is taking place within our current reality. While this reality is no one's first choice, your students are proving themselves to be resilient, skilled and inquisitive learners!

Of course, time always flies this part of the year, pandemic or not. A function of the readiness we aspire to embody, the last weeks of August and first weeks of September always seem to move the dial to 11 and make time evaporate. And yet, fall is such an awesome season! As summer grasps with all it’s might, autumn is gently taking hold with subtle breezes, cooler evenings and of course, the change of colors. Lauren DeStafano is quoted, “…the time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale”.

So yes, October is upon us. Don't blink; you might just miss it...

Resources, support & ideas for setting up a positive home learning environment

This Wednesday (and Friday)

Please note this week is a shortened instructional week. Specifically, Friday, October 9 is a staff development day, and as in non-pandemic times, it is not an instructional day for students.

As such, this Wednesday, October 7, will be considered a "typical" synchronous instructional day for teachers and students. PE and Music specials will shift forward to accommodate this; Thursday specials move to Wednesday, and Friday specials move to Thursday.

Please note there will be (3) additional Wednesdays within the school year that will follow the same process due to holidays, professional development days, grading days, etc. Mark your calendar:

Tiger’s Curbside Library is Here!

We are excited to open the Raleigh Park Library to our students and keep them reading as we start the year remotely! Use Tiger’s Curbside Library to request and check out books from the Raleigh Park Library. Two times a week, we’ll host curbside pick up so you can grab your books and go.

  • Tuesdays - 10:30a - 12:30p
  • Thursdays - 10:30a - 12:30p

How do you request books?

  • Browse the Raleigh Park Library collection and place a hold on books for your children. The only information you need is a 1) student ID number and 2) password. For more information on how to place holds, please view the video that follows, titled, Placing a Hold on a Book from Your Library.

How do I know when to pick up my books?

  • When a book is available for a student, we will email parents/guardians to let you know when the book will be ready for curbside pick up. Please email Judy_Lowe@beaverton.k12.or.us with additional questions.

Need a recommendation?

  • Email Mrs. Lowe, and she can share some thoughts and recommendations!

How do I return library books?

  • Bring books back to Raleigh Park during the curbside hours and leave them in the labelled bin. Books will be in quarantine for 1 week, so there will be a delay in checking the books back in the library.

  • Meet Mrs. Lowe and friends at prearranged bus stops to check out books. Look for the big yellow school bus full of books later this fall. Stay tuned!

Placing a Hold on a Book from Your Library

Zoom Privacy Guidelines/Expectations

To maintain a positive, productive learning environment and ensure privacy of students and teachers during Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL), all parents/guardians/students are asked to follow these guidelines:

  • Please do not video/audio record, photograph, livestream or transmit in any fashion Zoom classroom sessions. This restriction includes social media posting.

  • Any confidential or personally identifiable information related to students participating in Zoom classroom sessions should not be collected, discussed or shared.

  • Don’t post Zoom meeting information publicly and/or on any other social media accounts.

  • While we understand many adults are in proximity of the instruction and learning, please ensure the face of your child is the only one that is visible.

Student Attendance

Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:

  • Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.

    • Attending a live teacher-led session

    • Watching a teacher-recorded video

    • Interacting with a teacher via email

    • Posting completed coursework online

  • Attendance is expected during specials, as it would be at any other point in the instructional day.

  • Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5:00p each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.

  • If you believe your student was incorrectly marked "absent" for a day in which they engaged in learning (see aforementioned list), please contact the teacher directly.

PLEASE NOTE: attendance requirements set forth by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) are minimal, and don't match the expectations we have for all students to be engaged in their learning throughout the school day. While minimal requirements of attendance may reflect a student being "present", a partial/minimal day of instruction will undoubtedly impact the learning and engagement reflected in their report card.

Student Devices & Technology

Student Help Desk - Questions or concerns about student technology? Please contact the Student Help Desk:

Device Protection Program - Anticipating that all students will get a district-owned device (either Chromebook or iPad), the District adds a fee of $20 to students’ Online Payment accounts (maximum fee of $60 per family per school year) to enroll them in the Damage-Loss Protection Program. This fee is waived for families who qualify for the free or reduced-price meal benefits program and have completed the Permission to Share form. Students need to pay the assigned fee prior to any damage or loss claims to be eligible for the Protection Program coverage and no later than 30 days after they begin school. Students may choose to decline coverage. However, doing so isn't recommended, because a family would then assume full responsibility for any costs due to damage, loss or theft. These costs could be as much as $300 per incident, regardless of how the damage occurs. Visit the Student Device Resources webpage for more information.

  • To access the online payment system, you will need an active ParentVUE account. If you do not have a ParentVUE account, contact your school for an Activation Key code. Once the ParentVUE account is created, it may take up to 24 hours for the Online Payment System account to be activated. For more information on ParentVue, please visit the ParentVUE/StudentVUE page.

  • To pay for device insurance, you may use a Visa, Discover, or Mastercard​ (debit or credit card), and make a secure online payment for your student with no transaction fees. You can access the online payment system at https://or-beaverton.intouchreceipting.com. in addition to device insurance, you may pay additional student fees for lost library books, or make donations to school-based programs and activities.

  • If you did not select the permission to share option when applying for Free and Reduce Meals, you need to show the office staff your meals benefit letter indicating that you qualify for free or reduced meals. If you have payment questions, please see the school secretaries.

Internet Connectivity - Good news! BSD and Comcast have extended their partnership to provide free internet service to additional BSD families through June 30, 2021! We’re also extending free internet service for those families who have already signed up for the BSD-Sponsored Comcast Internet Essentials program through June 30, 2021. The program is open to students who qualify for free or reduced-cost meal benefits. Applications are available online. If your elementary or middle school student does not qualify for the Internet Essentials program, fill out this form to request a hotspot through our partnership with Sprint’s 1Million Project.

Did you know?

The District will be providing Internet Activity Reports to parents. Parents are automatically signed up for parent reports that started this past weekend, inclusive of a partial browsing history for BSD students using Chromebooks. On the weekend of October 3, the first full Internet Activity reports will be sent to parents of all BSD students using Chromebooks. It is expected that Internet Activity reports to Parents of BSD students using iPads will begin mid-October.

Meal Benefits

Could your family qualify for free/reduced price meals? Fill out an application online (https://www.schoolcafe.com). Applications are available in Spanish. If you’re unable to access the application online, call 503-356-3957. PLEASE NOTE: Meal benefits are awarded on a year to year basis; all families who have qualified in the past must reapply. Also, please consider inquiring about your eligibility, as benefit requirements have changed. Free/reduced eligibility is always underreported, and we want all who qualify to receive benefits during these times of uncertainty.

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Boxes

Thanks to a grant through the USDA, we're now able to offer more free food boxes on Wednesdays at three BSD locations beginning Wednesday, October 7:

  • Aloha High School: 11:00a - 1:00p (or until boxes are all distributed)
  • Beaverton High School: 12:00p - 1:00p
  • Southridge High School: 12:00p - 1:00p

We anticipate that each 44-lb. box will contain fresh produce, dairy and meat. There are no requirements to pick up a box. The distribution is open to all.

Yes, there will be many opportunities for virtual volunteering, and you can volunteer as much or as little as your schedule permits. Details to come, but get started early and sign up now. Often, the beginning of the school year creates a backlog in the background check system due to a rush of people looking to be cleared for volunteer and chaperone opportunities. If you have not done so already, NOW IS THE TIME to sign up.

Please reference the Beaverton School District's Volunteerism & Community Engagement resources. This is especially important if you plan to volunteer your time during the school day.

  • The Beaverton School District does not honor background checks through/from other agencies
  • Please allow approximately (2) weeks prior to clearing the background check

While this principal never likes telling an enthusiastic volunteer "no", these expectations are non-negotiable and in service of the safety of our students.

Washington County COVID Case Counts

This link is for reference and provides the Oregon COVID-19 county case rates and test positivity by week. For the week ending August 31, Washington County had 36 cases per 100,000 and 3.4% test positivity.

For a school to return to in-person instruction through ODE’s On-Site or Hybrid instructional models, the metrics below, which consider local as well as statewide conditions, must be met:

  • County Metrics - metrics to be met three weeks in a row:
  • Case rate: ≤10 cases per 100,000 population in the preceding 7 days
  • Test positivity: ≤5% in the preceding 7 days
  • State Metric -metric to be met three weeks in a row
  • Test positivity: ≤5% in the preceding 7 days

Additional metrics: for a school district that draws >10% of students or staff from one or more other counties, the rate of new “cases per 100,000” and percent of “test positivity” should be considered in each of those counties.

PLEASE NOTE: due to more than 10% of BSD staff residing from Multnomah County, BSD return to in-person instruction will be connected to Multnomah County metrics.

Extension of CDL

As of the September 28 School Board meeting, BSD administrators announced plans to extend Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) through the end of first semester (February 8) for grades 4-12. We continue to consider extending CDL through February 8 for grades Pre K-3.

Grades 4-12

While the Beaverton School District is located in Washington County, the BSD is linked with Multnomah County because more than 10% of District employees live in that neighboring county. To be able to start hybrid learning (part in-school/part CDL) for grades 4-12, the following metrics would have to be met:

  • 10 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less statewide over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row

Given the trajectory of the health metrics, the BSD doesn't believe it can realistically meet those numbers by November 16, the end of the first quarter. It was previously communicated that the decision to continue in CDL on a quarter-by-quarter basis.

Grades Pre K-3

As established by Governor Kate Brown, the criteria for starting hybrid learning with Pre K-3 students is different:

  • 30 or fewer cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • Test positivity of 5% or less in Washington (and Multnomah) County over 7 days for 3 weeks in a row
  • COVID-19 is not actively spreading in the school community

Again, current health metrics aren’t trending in a positive direction. However, the BSD will wait until October 19 to make a final decision for the quarter.

Know that if the BSD were to see a drastic change in metrics or the Oregon Department of Education/Oregon Health Authority changed the guidance, this could alter the decision. The goal is to provide families with as much information as possible and plans accordingly.

International Walk+Roll Day: October 7

Join students and families from around the world as you walk or roll in your neighborhood on October 7. (Please remember to stay 6 feet from those not in your household and wear a mask.)

All community members are welcome to participate. Use THIS LINK to fill out the google form for each person that joined you on your trip. (BSD students may include name and student ID number for a prize entry).

This year students can earn things like flashing safety lights, reflective shoelaces and new bike helmets. Schools with the most participation will also earn a Safe Routes to School book bundle for their school library.

Social & Political Expression

The BSD has received numerous questions about the appropriate manner in which to express social or political viewpoints in schools — whether virtual or in-person. We understand and appreciate that our students, families and staff have beliefs that span the political spectrum. Please reference the following link for more detail regarding political expression within the learning community.


Whether they’re in school physically or not, we know that kids keep growing and growing out of their clothes. The district-run Clothes Closet will be reopening on August 24 to provide new or gently used clothing to any student who qualifies for free or reduced lunch.

Because of COVID-19, the BSD clothes closet is moving to an appointment-only scheduling system. If you and your student(s) would like to select clothes for the upcoming school year, please sign up online. If you’re unable to access the online calendar, call 503-356-4322 to schedule an appointment. Please note: all Clothes Closet visitors will need to wear masks and gloves. If you don’t have your own, they’ll provide them.

BSD seeks applicants for Social Studies Project Team

BSD seeks applicants for Social Studies Project Team - Teachers, students, parents, administrators, and community members are encouraged to apply to serve on the Beaverton School District’s Social Studies Project Team. The Social Studies Project Team will review existing Social Studies curriculum and practices in order to make curriculum adoption recommendations to the School Board. The Project Team’s work will begin on October 20, 2020 and will conclude by June of 2021.
