Course Selection Information for 2021-2022
Dear Current and Future Mustangs,
This is an exciting time of year where we look forward to the year ahead in middle school. It is also a time that requires some very careful planning for your future. Included in this newsletter are scheduled activities and information that will help you get ready for a successful new year at O. Henry Middle School.
Transition to 2021-2022 School Year Timeline
Feeder Elementary Classroom visits to complete Choice Sheets for students (families will be able to review/edit before submitting):
Barton Hills: 6th grade, Tues. Feb. 9th
Barton Hills: 5th grade, Wed. Feb. 10th
Brykerwoods: Fri. Feb. 12th
Casis: Fri. Feb. 12th
Mathews: Fri. March 5th
Oak Hill: Mon. Feb. 8th
Zilker: Wed. Feb. 10th
Current OHMS students classroom visits to complete Choice Sheets (families will be able to review/edit before submitting):
Current 6th graders - World Cultures classes (Wednesday/Thursday, March 3rd and 4th)
Current 7th graders - Texas History classes (Wednesday/Thursday, March 3rd and 4th)
Your child will be given an extensive presentation on completing their choice sheet (course selections) for next year during their Social Studies class this week. Students will work on the choice sheet during the classroom presentation but will not submit it until review by parents. Please do not have your child download, complete, or submit a choice sheet until your child has their presentation from an OHMS counselor. : )
Non Feeder and Non OHMS students:
OHMS Counselors will reach out to Elementary Counselors and parents week of March 1st.

Elementary schools will have presentations between Feb. 8th and 12th.
Current O. Henry students will have presentations between Feb. 16th and 19th.

Required Courses
All Middle School students take the four core classes every year - English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Math. For families looking for advanced math options for their student, we have two accelerated tracks available.
6th grade Accelerated Math: Algebra Track: Four years of math instruction are compacted into three years with students completing high school Algebra I in their eighth-grade year.
6th grade Accelerated Math: Algebra + Geometry Track: Additional Advanced Math experience compacts curriculum for 6-8 grade math in sixth grade, high school Algebra I in seventh grade and high school Geometry in 8th grade.
