Student and Parent Information for Eighth Grade ELA
Hello 8th Graders! I am so happy you are in my class! This year, we will learn, achieve, and grow together.
- Learn: A few reading selections you can look forward to are: The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (a personal fave), Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand (another personal fave), poetry by Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe, Langston Hughes, and Emily Dickinson. We will be doing a lot of READING FOR PLEASURE! Yay! What fun! Our writing will include narrative and persuasive essays, argument writing, poetry, and extended and short response. You will also learn cursive writing.
- Achieve: Though this is an 8th-grade ELA class, the themes, and skills we will learn transfer to all future endeavors- from high school to college and the workforce. I want you to leave this class confident in your reading, writing, and speaking skills. The lessons in this class will align with SC state standards which may be found here: https://ed.sc.gov/sites/scdoe/assets/File/instruction/standards/ELA/SCCCRStandards%20OnePagerGrade%208%20ELA.pdf.
- Grow: One of my goals is that you grow in your ELA talents (reading, writing, speaking). Please respect yourself and know that you can succeed using your intelligence and talents. Please review the school handbook for plagiarism policies.
