A Principal's Perspective
We have focused on not just having a growth mindset but an innovative mindset. Part of having both a growth and innovative mindset is taking risks. Watch the video clip below (shared by a teacher & principal from another school). What resonates with you? I am sure we have all felt the way this woman felt as we try something new. Trying something new is scary! You have a goal. You know the steps to accomplish that goal. But the first steps are big ones! What do you notice as she contemplates her first jump? The encouragement of others? The coaching? The self talk? The baby steps to the big jump? Taking the risk proved to be successful. What an accomplishment! What will you try this year in your classroom? Will you take a risk to be innovative? As you think of an idea, think of this woman. What will you need to take that step? Although scary, setting your mind to a goal, seeking the advice/encouragement from others, and taking steps to achieve that goal all can be done! Perfect?? No, probably not. Better the next time? Yes, probably so. Most importantly? The step was taken. How can this apply to our students as well (Great clip to show our students!)? Do they have a safe place to take risks? When we end the year, I hope that you can look back with that sense of "I did it!" because you and your students took that bold step to take a risk in teaching and learning!
Be Innovative - Design the possibilities!
