Preparation, Motivation and EXCELLENT Education: The DMS Way

Small Gifts...

I remember thinking on the night that my daughter was to receive her "Youth of the Year" Award (pictured right), that we had worked so hard and yet, we had forgotten one critical thing: her award speech. So, I spoke in hushed tones throughout the banquet; quickly, giving her directions on what to say and what not to, going over the most impromptu thing I had ever composed in my head with her several times, and finally she just looked at me and said, "mom, I got it." Moments later, she accepted her award, thanked everyone, added some words of encouragement and rocked it with not even the smallest of hitches.

Kinda like she had been doing it her whole life.

I realized then that maybe, as her mom, I had been giving her small tools; gifts if you will, all along to help her be perfectly ready for her big moment. A lot like this education/parent partnership thing isn't it? Neither come with instructions, and yet, we all have blazed through the first half of the school year and to the end of the year. Maybe not without the slightest of hitches, but nevertheless, we are here and accounted for as we close out the first semester of the middle school year. Thank you all once again for your continued support at DMS. I have met this year, perhaps the most parents I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, since I began serving in Parent Engagement capacity, and it has been such a rewarding and fun experience. I am continually inspired by your advocacy for education and I have great hopes for our students as they continue this school year.

Speaking of small gifts, we are continuing to build upon our students' writing and vocabulary skills in preparation for Milestones testing. Please look out for upcoming workshops, academies and meetings all focused on small skills-building exercises. Additionally, the Parent Resource Office now has flash card activities available for take home practice over the holidays. Stop by and check it out! Perhaps it will be these little things that prepare our students for THEIR big moments.

Parent Engagement Week 2015 was once again a HUGE success! Thanks to all of the parents who dropped by to hang out with us. Check some pics below. You just might see your face! This week was proof positive that we have the BEST parents ever. You guys make awesome look easy...

Kinda like you've been doing it your whole lives. :-)

Happy Holidays!
