Chapter 3: Engage for Positive Class Climate
5 Actions to Create a Positive Class Climate:
- Raise the bar
- Manage mind-body states
- Establish that "we are family"
- Sustain emotional positivity
- Teach positive social and emotional responses
Action 3: Establish that "We are family"
- Relationship matter. Think about the relationships you have with your students, your class, and the relationships that the kids have with each other.
- Ages 7-8 is when kids are interested in affiliation among peers.
- Ages 12-13, children focus on social status and want to feel special among their peers.
Solutions:
Adopt a "parent" role in your class: Try to learn every student's strengths or unique talents
Form Cooperative Groups (Elementary): Think about how this type of grouping helps build relationships and a family community.
Create the "class glue" with get-to-know-you activities: Community circles, addressing everyone by name, making eye contact, etc.
Help students gain social status: Have students share their work, highlight accomplishments, etc.

Thank you for another great week of instruction. Below are a few updates:
Parent Teacher Conferences
- Remember to talk about facts, and support your facts with data
- Never assume that our parents don't care, we have amazing parents. Many are stressed and dealing with their own mental health.
- Our parents may not understand "education jargon". Make sure you explain and answer questions.
Open House
- Our Winter/Spring Open House will be from 8:45-10:45
- Community and family members will visit your classroom. They will start in the cafeteria at 8:45 with breakfast and music.
Recess and Discipline
- Recess cannot be taken away without Karyn or my approval. You can have a brief discussion on expectations, but no child should lose recess.
Illness/CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
- Tyrone and his staff will be deep cleaning the building on Saturday morning. I know we have sick students and staff members.
- Please refer any parents to the website https://www.aacps.org/coronavirus
Interims will be in your mailboxes on Monday Have a wonderful week.
Don't forget to join us at the staff gathering @ Bubba's Burgers on Friday..
