Week 37: Sea Shells
Whenever I go to the beach, I take a walk along the edge of the surf and look for seashells. Some of them I admire and toss back into the surf to be ground into sand by the wave action. Others will find their way into my pockets, bag, or hand. My husband will ask me what I plan to do with them, and I give some vague answer that really does not matter. We both know that the shells will come home with me. I have a jar of them in the guest bath, a bowl of them in my office, and lamp bases filled with them. I am fascinated by their beauty and love looking at them time and time again. Interestingly, I have very few perfect shells. Most are broken in some way. Perfect shells are pretty, but it is the broken ones that have something to share. The shattered tulip shell shows the beautiful symmetry hidden inside, and the mother of pearl iridescence can only be seen in the halved shell. Other shells give evidence of interactions with other sea creatures. Perfect holes in the shell show predation while barnacles and tubeworms build homes on others.
My shells remind me of us all. All of us are broken in some way – none of us is perfect - but it is through our imperfections that we are interesting. The challenges that we go through shape us and strengthen us and, perhaps, give us some bit of wisdom to share with others as they face their challenges. Our Heavenly Father cherishes each of us – with all our brokenness and blemishes. I pray that you allow God to use you and your brokenness in service to Him.
