Your News For What's Happening in Room 404!

Reading News

We have been VERY busy in Reading Workshop this year already! Students have learned that "Reading is Thinking" and have practiced taking specific notes during their independent reading time. Students are looking for connections within text, picturing scenes from their books, finding points of interest, sharing their feelings on events from the text and identifying characters and other story elements. They have learned to Stop! Think and Jot! These reader's notes all come together in the student's Reading Response Letter which is drafted and turned in every Friday. It is important that readers stay active and monitor themselves while reading.

Writing News

Our writers are currently in the middle of either drafting or publishing their first personal narrative for the year. So far, we have learned how to focus stories to narrow them down, choose a seed story and begin to draft. We have also used a timeline to tell our story from beginning to end. Students have learned to find the heart of their story and then dialogue it out to add depth. They have practiced adding feelings, emotions and thoughts to make their stories better. Students have participated in their first conferences. We have tried adding similes to our writing to "show" not tell about specific parts of our draft.

Thank You Students!!

Audrey for always being ready and willing to help out!

Kade for being a model student representing the CHAMP guidelines in the classroom.

Taylor C. for going above and beyond in using our Reading Strategy STOP! Think and JOT! Her reader's response notebook looks amazing!

Word Study - Short o and Long o

This week our spelling principle is short o and long o. Students will be sorting, spelling, and brainstorming words that follow this principle. Our test will still be on Friday. Students will continue to complete 3 spelling homework options to aid in studying for their test.
