Alcohol
1. Ethanol can be used to make alcoholic drinks.
2. The desired effect of alcohol is to alternate your mood.
3. Alcohol isn't broken down by the liver so it goes tot he rest of the body, including the brain. Alcohol can affect parts of the brain that control movement, speech, judgement, and memory.
4. Long term health risks- over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and cancer of the breast, mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, and colon.
5. Alcohol can be used for drinking, cleaning, fuel (ethanol), alcohol used for cleaning wounds.
6. Texas Alcohol Detox/ rehab treatment: treatment for addictive behavior and mental health issues.
Cannabis
1. smoked (through a pipe or bong or hand rolled into a joint) or taken orally with food (baked). cannabis can also be used medically to treat conditions such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV/aids, muscle spasms, seizures, severe nausea, wasting syndrome.
2. Smoked or eaten to have a high feeling. Medically for treating conditions.
3. Short term effects-difficulty thinking, concentrating, memory loss. Long term effects-lowered motivation and impaired ability to function in normal day life, anxiety, increased heart problems.
4. Respiratory problems like tobacco smokers.
5. Smoking (ground up) eating (baked into cookies) , Cannabis pills
6. There is self-substitute drugs that can be given to an individual undergoing a marijuana detox that is given under the care of professionals in a hospital or rehab center.
Cocaine
1. Cocaine can be injected or snorted (called crack)
2. Cocaine goes straight to the brain for a high sensation.
3. Short term- a short lived intense high that is immediately followed by the opposite intense depression, edginess and a craving for more of the drug. Long term- Cocaine interferes with the way the brain processes chemicals, needs more and more of the drug to feel "normal"
4. Liver, kidney, lung damage, high blood pressure leading to heart attacks, stoke, and death.
5. There are two ways you can consume Cocaine. Power or crystal form for snorting. Liquid for injecting.
6. Opiate detox-morphine, heroin, codeine, fentanyl. Drug detox programs or rehab centers.
Hallucinogen
1. LSD can be taken in small tablets or taken orally (called trips) and will usually last approximately 12 hours.
2. To have a high feeling ( trip) and also hallucinate.
3. LSD, peyote, and psilocybin cause effects by initially distributing the interaction of nerve cells and the neurotransmitter serotonin. Can effect the brain by getting bad thoughts.
4. LSD can raise the bodies temperature, increase heart rate and blood pressure. Psilochbin (shrooms) can produce muscle relaxation or weakness, nausea, drowsiness. PCP can cause shallow breathing.
5. Different forms are small tablets ( acid) and mushroom form, both are taken orally.
6. There are medications provided in detox and rehab centers to wean a user off these addictions.
Heroin
1. Heroin can be snorted, smoked, or injected.
2. User experience a surge of pleasurable sensation—a “rush.”
3. Depress breathing by changing neurochemical activity in the brain stem, where automatic body functions such as breathing and heart rate are controlled. Heroin can block pain messages transmitted through the spinal cord from the body.
4. Changes the physical structure and physiology of the brain, creating long-term imbalances in neuronal and hormonal systems.
5. Heroin comes in forms of powder, crystal, tar and liquid.
6. Medications can be helpful in this detoxification stage to ease craving and other physical symptoms, which often prompt a person to relapse.
Meth
1. Meth is taken orally, smoked, snorted, injected. Normally dissolved in water, alcohol or injected.
2. Meth can create a false sense of well being and energy.
3. User may suffer brain damage, including memory loss and an increasing inability to understand thoughts.
4. Increased heart rate, high blood pressure, damaged blood vessels in the brain that can cause strokes, an irregular heartbeat that can cause heart attack or death. Liver, kidney and lung damage are also possible.
5. Meth can come in pill form, capsules, powder, and smoked.
6. Medications can administered in a rehab facility to detox from meth.
Nicotine
1. Nicotine is commonly used in cigarettes, dipping and chewing tobacco
2. Acts as a stimulant in small doses as well as calms nerves
3. Block the action of autonomic nerve and skeletal muscle.
4. Can cause cancer in multiple areas of the body depending on the type of nicotine used. Can cause chest pains, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat.
5. liquid, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, dipping tobacco.
6. There are many detoxification options from nicotine. Some use nicotine patches. Some use therapy from licensed professionals or hypnotism. Some people just quit cold turkey.
Pain Killers
1. Pain Killers are commonly used to ease the pain from medical surgeries and or accidental injuries.
2. The desired effect is to relieve pain. Pain Killers are commonly abused and are consumed to give a person a sensation of feeling high.
3. Pain killers effect the brain by giving a person a short lived high with no or less pain in areas of injuries.
4. Slowed heart rate, slowed breathing
5. Pain killers can be in the form of pills, liquid, and injected.
6. Medications can be administered under the care of a doctor or rehab center. Some people detox themselves from pain killers but the chance of relapse is very common.
