An Important Update from Dr. Lenart
October 11, 2022
Dear Lake Forest High School Faculty, Staff, Students, and Families:
As we have previously shared, on Thursday, October 6, a single unspent bullet was discovered in a well-traveled throughway of the Lake Forest High School Library.
I am pleased to report that, this morning, a student came forward with knowledge of the origin of that bullet. Following further investigation, we have identified the individual who is responsible for the bullet’s presence in our building. We are proud of the courage and character exhibited by the individual who made this report.
Regarding the Saturday, October 8 incident involving vandalization of a LFHS evacuation map that included threatening language and hateful imagery, the Lake Forest Police Department has confirmed that three LFHS students, at differing levels of involvement, had immediate knowledge of and/or were responsible for the graffiti. We are completing our own interviews and have taken steps to ensure that the students we believe were involved do not pose a threat to the school. Specific information regarding these measures is confidential and a matter for the school and the families involved.
In addition to our own school-based disciplinary procedures (Board Policy 7:190), the Lake Forest Police Department is taking disciplinary action. “Subjects in both incidents have now been identified and will be referred to the Robert W. Depke Juvenile Detention Center to determine appropriate juvenile charges,” says Lake Forest Deputy Chief of Police Robert Copeland.
Rumors will surely continue and we will remain steadfastly committed to thoroughly investigating. While we will remain vigilant in our focus on safety and security in our buildings and across our East and West campuses, we are relieved to have positively identified the sources of these recent issues. Today’s breakthrough regarding the bullet is because someone saw something, and said something. This is how Scouts care for Scouts.
It bears repeating - we are strongest and safest when we are one.
Most respectfully,
Erin
