Amendment 1

fredom of press, religion, speech, and assembly

The First Amendment

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"

Freedom of Speech

In my own words I think freedom of speech allows us (the people) to speak our minds. But what you might not know is that you cant say anything that you want, there are restictions to what you say. For example you can't yell fire in a movie theatre unless there is a fire. I know the amendment says that you have freedom of speech, which you do but basically you can say anthing that you want unless it could potentially harm someone.

Why?

The first amendment was created to make sure that history doesn't repeat its self. Before the colonies were independant there was no freedom of speech. If you spoke badly about the king you were most likely going to be thrown into jail and hung. Many people were killed because of this. That is why the first amendment and freedom of speech is so important. A modern application of this amendment is President Obama. Mr. Obama is the current president, alot of people don't agree with what he says but the majority of people do. we are aloud to say " I don't like Obama" or " Our country needs Obama to stop putting us further in debt". We are allowed to say these things becuase we have the first amendment.

In my Opinion

In my opinion I think that freedom of speech is one of the most important parts in the Constitution. I feel this way becuase it is very well put, whatI mean by this is we have the perfect amount of power, we can speek freely but only to the extent that no one gets hurt. We can live fine lives under this amendment with nothing to complain about, after all why would I need to use my words to get somone hurt. I don't, nobody really does.

Freedom of Religion

In my own words I could sum up this particular part of the first amendment in just a couple of words, those words are; the freedom to practice what ever religion you want. How many words was that? Like what 9? Yep, I just describled one part of an amendment in 9 words. My point is is that this amendment is very straigh foroward and general. Maybe a little bit to general...

Why?

This amendment was created because when there were no colonies, the people in England all had to be cathlic, Many people (mostly the protestant) wanted to practice a different religion, that is why most of the piligrims left England and formed the colonies. A modern example is cults. Cults have there very own made up religion. Some of these cults are very strong and can sometimes be dangerous, but we cannot do anything about this because in would be unconstitutional.

In my Opinion

In my opinion I think this part of the first amendment is way to general, to an extent where it could be potentially dangerous. I think that religions with very strange and unusual ways of worship, should not be aloud. I think they should npt be allowed because is some cults in the past people were killed, almost killed or injured. But, I also believe that this amendment is good also. I think the good part of this amendment is that we have freedom. Maybe sometimes a little bit to much like in this case, but i think it is good that we actually have freedom unlike most of the other countries in this world.

Freedom of Assembly

In my own words this part of the first amendment is definitly important. I think it is important beause this part allows you to be able to form a group and have meetings. This part of the amendment is important because with out it people couldn't go to a class or a team meeting with out being questioned. I think that this part o the first amendment is no the most important part of the amendment, but it is definitly not the least important part.

Why?

This amendment was created because of the rebles during the American Revolution. The rebles used to secretly meet and talk about ways to over throw the king. In those time it was illegal to speak badly about the king, but even worse if a group of people were planning to over throw him. A modern example of freedom of assembly is when people go to lunch with friends, they all meet up and lets say got to Stir Crazy. People can do this because of this first amendment.

In my Opinion

In my opionion I think that this part of the first amendment definitly goes hand in hand with freedom of speech. I think that they go together because when the colonies were rebelling they would have meetings and they would plot to over throw the king. i alos think that freedom of assembly is important becuase woht out it life would be a lot harder.

Freedom of Press

In my own words this part of the amendment is the most important part of the first amendment. It is basically the right to privacy. It allows you to have freedom from the press which means you don't have to answer any of there questions and cant post or publish any pictures of you.

Why?

I think that this part of the first amendment was made because when the continental congress was happeneing there was to be no press because if any of there plans got out then the king would hear and he would win the war. There was also no press allowed because they would of disrupted the congress men's focus, and the they would get noting done. A modern exaple of this law is lets say you are a famous actor or actress and the press starts to come up to you and takes a bunch of photos, well recently an actor or actress actually hit the camera man, because he was taking pictures of her. Now some people are depating whether that was illigal or not but everyone always ends up look at the first amendment to decide whether that camera man could press charges.

In my Opinion

In my opinion this is probaly one of the most important amendments. I think it is important because it is simple but, affective. All it is basically is privacy.
