September Shake
mini explosions, toy store opening, 100 Book Club and more..
Did you feel the Earth shake?
We experimented with baking soda and vinegar. Our learners made predictions, experimented with the materials and came back together to talk about their findings. They had so much fun! Thanks to all who sent in materials and for volunteers.

Literacy Lane
When we went to Literacy Lane, we compare 2 versions of an old favorite, The Little Red Hen. Then, to extend their learning, the students got in groups to retell the story. Here is one example.

groups defined rolls, created characters, and practiced
This was a great opportunity to work cooperatively in a group. This is sometimes painful for some and joyful for others. It was a great lesson on listening to another's perspective.

Mystery Reader
Starting next, we will have a "Mystery Reader" each Thursday. The "Mystery Reader" will knock on the door at 10:15. We will say "Mystery Reader, come on in!" The reader is a mystery to us, so please don't tell. Anyone is welcome (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.). Please fill in for one time slot at first, and we can fill in as needed. This time backs up to our lunch time, so feel free to stay and have lunch. Click on the link below to sign up...
Back on the farm (or in our space)...
The learners have decided to improve our community with a toy store. This has taken some planning and real thinking. It is not quite open, but we are utilizing some of the materials that the learners have decided to put in the "Toy Store." To give some background on how this came about...It got to be so crowded at the market, the kids said we needed a new component of our community. One learner, so excitedly, said we should have a toy story and "I love army men. I think we should have army men." That caught on with all of the learners. So, we began the planning stages. What should go in the toy store? What learning will take place with each item? Where should we put it? So, we have decided to put in the toy store the following; army men, math games, Barbies, puzzles, Legos. I am working with the kids on verbalizing what they are learning. Please ask them! I am curious to their responses. If they say, "nothing," please let me know. That will let me know what I need to focus on. I really had to think on the army men to connect that to a standard, but I think we got it!!! More to come...
100 Book Club
We are graphing our class goal for the 100 Book Club. What a math discussion it was! If each student's goal is 100 books read, then how many books would our whole class need to read for all to reach their goal? Each learner is graphing a 25 book section as they bring in their log completed. Keep up the reading!!!
