Grade 10 State Mandated Health Screenings
According to Massachusetts General Laws, all grade 10 students are required to have vision, hearing, and body mass index (BMI) screenings. Parents and guardians may opt their child out of any screening. Please notify your child's school nurse in writing if this is the case.
We will be conducting these screenings for 10th graders the week of May 8, 2023.
Vision:
If a student does not pass the vision screening, a referral letter recommending further evaluation by his/her care provider or eye specialist will be sent home. Please contact your child's physician or health care provider promptly for an evaluation if you are notified that your child has not passed the vision screening. Early detection and correction may prevent problems with school performance and permanent vision loss. Optimal vision is essential in order for your child to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maximize his/her educational experience and success. Students who wear glasses or contacts should wear them during the screening.
Hearing:
Students who do not pass the hearing screening are rechecked at a later date, as a decrease in hearing may be related to cold symptoms or congestion.
Please contact your child’s physician or health care provider promptly for an evaluation if you are notified that your child has not passed the hearing screening. Early detection and correction may prevent problems with school performance and permanent hearing loss. Optimal hearing is essential in order for your child to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maximize his/her educational experience and success.
Height, Weight, and BMI:
Body Mass Index is a measure that is used to show “weight for height for age,” and is therefore calculated using an individual’s height and weight. Just like a blood pressure reading or a vision screening test, a person's BMI can be a useful tool in identifying possible health risks. This screening will be conducted in the privacy of the nurses office.
Students’ BMI screening results are part of the health record and, as such, are strictly confidential and should not be discussed with anyone other than the student and his/her parents or legal guardians and healthcare provider. The data is also sent to the state, but in aggregate form, representing a picture of the district but not individual results.
Please contact your school nurse if you have questions or would like to opt your child out of any of the above screenings.
Healthy regards,
Cheryl Dufault BSN, RN, NCSN ~ cdufault@monomoy.edu
Sara Sears BSN, RN ~ ssears@monomoy.edu

VPA Japan Trip 2023
Congrats and thank you to everyone involved for a life-changing experience in a beautiful country! All 52 travelers had a safe and memorable tour over April break–– exploring Kyoto, Takayama, Shirakawa, Kanazawa, and Tokyo! We ate lots of Udon, explored stunning temples and shrines, climbed a mountain overlooking a traditional village, traveled 180 MPH on the bullet train to Tokyo, experienced Zen Buddhist meditation and traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, and learned so much about Japanese history, arts, and culture. This will be the first of MANY international trips for the Visual and Performing Arts Department!
If you traveled with us, please add your favorite images to the shared google drive album so we can design a keepsake photobook AND slideshow of our tour! We will also be planning a reunion potluck sometime in the near future. Stay tuned!

National Art Honor Society: Bridging the Generation Gap through Art
The National Art Honor Society, in collaboration with Maplewood Assisted Living in Brewster, will be holding an Art Show, opening on May 7th between 1:00pm-4:00pm. Bridging the Generation Gap through Art is a collection of artworks from the residents at Maplewood and our very own National Art Honor Society members.
The NAHS began its relationship with Maplewood after their community outreach event, where students created their own coloring sheets for the residents to fill in. The show will feature paintings, paperworks, illustrations, sculptures, ceramics, and many more interesting works created by artists spanning the generations.
To RSVP for the event, please contact Maplewood Assisted Living in Brewster, MA at 774-323-3983.
National Art Honor Society contribution to Project Hope
Project Hope is a program that consists of high school Art students throughout Cape Cod. Child and Family Services will display their work and in doing so create “the hallway of hope” to set the tone for mental health support. Child & Family Services offers comprehensive mental health and child welfare services to children, adults, families and those with special needs.
Monomoy's chapter of the National Art Honor Society designed a beautiful 5ftx3ft painting that represented resilience, growth, and, of course, hope. Artists Ashley Smith, Jordan MacRoberts, Lillian Gould, Emily Gray, Vaughn Jameson, Sarah Groves, James Machnik, and Alexa Schneeburger all collaborated to paint this symbol for the children and families of Cape Cod. \
The showing is on May 19th from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the Child and Family Services office, 100 Independence Dr. Suite 8, Hyannis, MA 02601. To RSVP, please contact the offices at 774 487-3085, or contact Jeanne Bissonnette at jbissonnette@cfservices.org.

Monomoy's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council
Hello! Monomoy’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council (DEIBAC) is gathering anonymous student submissions about the unique experiences our students have related to race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, native language, hidden disability, unique families, and the many, many more characteristics that make you, YOU!
Our goal with these stories is to find barriers that appear within the Monomoy educational system and work to erase resulting gaps in learning, development, happiness, and safety for all of our students. Your submissions will be fully anonymous unless you choose otherwise! These first-hand stories will help our school community better understand the real experiences of our students.
The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council is made up of a diverse group of parents, teachers, community members, and students who are working to improve the district. If you are interested in other council efforts, looking for advice in the realm of equity, or wish to start a conversation we are missing, please email equity@monomoy.edu
We look forward to hearing from you!
