Signs of Suicide
The social/emotional well-being and physical safety of each student is extremely important in Fayette County. In order to address concerns of depression and child/adolescent suicide proactively, the district has implemented the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Prevention Program. The SOS program has been researched and proven successful at increasing skills in students, such as seeking help for friends and involving trusted adults.
Our SOS program goals are as follows:
- To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
- To provide students training in how to identify serious depression and potential risk of suicide in a friend
- To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a trusted adult about their concerns
- To teach students who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it
Seniors: College Admissions Deadlines
Seniors!! As another round of college admissions deadlines approaches, and with the holiday breaks right around the corner, we want to help avoid last-minute stress, and want YOU and our SMHS faculty to enjoy their time of rest and celebration.
In order to do this, please have any requests for components of college applications that involve a school counselor by FRIDAY, DEC 8TH. Any requests submitted after this date are not guaranteed to be completed.
Georgia Military Service Full-Ride Scholarships
Every year, we award 42 Georgia high school seniors full scholarships to attend the University of North Georgia and participate in the Corps of Cadets—the Boar’s Head Brigade. On average, we only receive 70 to 80 qualified applicants each year!
We’re extremely interested in college-bound Georgia-resident students who might be considering military programs in college. The Georgia Military Service Scholarship (GMSS) pays for tuition, fees, room, meals, books, and uniforms for eight semesters; about $80,000 over four years.
In addition to the $80,000 scholarship, recipients become Soldiers in the Georgia Army National Guard and earn pay and benefits that total at least $30,000 and up to $55,000 or more during their time in college, and many are paid even more for occupying leadership roles in the Corps of Cadets. This money can cover other expenses and eliminate the financial stress of college altogether: recipients can graduate with no college debt, get paid to go to college, and have money left in the bank.
The scholarship application is open now for seniors. Detailed information and application instructions are at ung.edu/cadet/scholarships.

Rocket & Starr's Mentoring Program
The SMHS Counseling department sponsors Rocket & Starr's Mentoring Program. This mentoring program started in 2001 when Starr's Mill High students partnered with Peeple's Elementary students to be a mentor and make a positive impact on each student. The students ended their first semester. Here are a few pictures throughout the semester. Thank you to all who participated and made an impact on their mentee.
