Math

This week in math, students will begin their first module. This module will cover Ratios and Proportional Relationships. I have attached a Parent Tip Sheet below describing more of what will be covered in the first topic.

Homework:

Students will be given a problem set to complete after each lesson, this means students will have homework almost every evening. They have until the end of the topic to complete all problem sets and grades will be given when students complete a homework check on Schoology.

If students are struggling with their homework, they will have the chance to ask for help at the beginning of class the next day.

The Rogue Runner Math Mystery

Last week in math students solved clues to narrow down suspects to figure out who was robbing the town of Mathattan. In order to solve clues, students had to solve problems involving writing ratios, solving for equivalent ratios and finding unit rates. Below are some of the groups hard at work.

Language Arts

This week in Language Arts, students will begin work on The Outsiders. While reading, we will practice our language arts skills through vocabulary, writing, comprehending and analyzing the literature, while practicing our work with the literary elements we have been reviewing: plot, character, conflict, theme, and setting.

Students may have some homework assignments to complete daily in-class assignments. Please check student planners, as I will ask them to write down assignments there.

Our work with the novel is to help us answer the unit essential question: How do we overcome prejudice? I am looking forward to some great discussions and challenges through our reading, and hopefully, you will become a participant as well! If you would like to read along with us to engage your child in literary discussions at home, we will cover chapters 1-2 this week.

Additionally, if you find that your child is falling behind on assignments, please have him/her request a note to come see me before school. I would be happy to help!

SCIENCE

This week in science we are beginning our Ecology unit. Students guiding questions are :

What does an organism get from its environment?

What are the two parts of an organism's environment?

How is an Ecosystem organized?

Students will be using inquiry activities and focused note taking to work on Lesson 1. Many of our daily assignments are completed in class. However, if students do not use time wisely or fall behind, they may have to complete as homework.

Students were given a paper copy of this units textbook. They are also able to access their text book at www.peasonrealize.com.

Social Studies

This week in World Geography, we are continuing exploring the general topics of Geography. We will be finishing up directions and latitude and longitude. We will also begin discussing physical geography, specifically, landforms.

We will also be using a couple days to create our own landforms on a specific Minecraft server, and we will share our digital creations together this week. We will talk about the different landforms that the world around us creates, as well as if and how it affects people in those areas. It should be a great time!
