Fentanyl Lessons Being Taught at SMS
As previously noted in district communications, our district is taking steps to help increase awareness of the dangers of fentanyl, including implementing lessons at the middle and high school levels. We plan to teach lessons to our students at Sherwood Middle School starting the week of May 31-June 3. You can view the middle-level lesson by clicking on the links below. Additionally, one of the best prevention steps is talking to your student about never taking any medication that doesn’t come from their doctor.
Optional Additional Resource (Some teachers may choose to include in their lesson)
If you have any concerns about how your child may react to these lessons, please reach out to your student’s counselor directly.
As you may know, the rise of Fentanyl use across the country, in Oregon, and right here in Washington County is alarming. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is similar to morphine, but 50 to 100 times more potent. Fentanyl overdoses are rising at a rapid rate for most age groups, including teens. Perhaps the most alarming part of this emerging crisis is the rise of “fake pills'' that are accessible to teens through social media and other sources.
These pills may look identical to pharmaceutical grade pills like OxyContin or Xanax, but they are not. These pills are not produced in sophisticated labs with precise doses. The counterfeit pills are produced cheaply and quickly and often distributed via online platforms like Snapchat or other social media. They often contain lethal doses of Fentanyl, and just one pill can kill. Two Portland teens tragically died earlier this spring in Portland and police in the Portland area recently seized 150,000 of these pills.
Our district is taking this issue seriously and is committed to its ongoing efforts to educate teens and their families about this important issue. This conversation is a critical tool that could protect your child. Thank you to our staff for their help in providing these important lessons, and to our families for your partnership on this topic.
8th Grade Promotion:
- Save the Date: The Sherwood Middle School Promotion activities will take place on Friday, June 17th from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Name on Promotion Certificates: Your student’s promotion certificate will contain your student’s legal name from his or her school record. If there is a preferred name that you would prefer on the certificate, please click here to provide the preferred name. All name changes on the promotion certificates must come from the parent/guardian to ensure approval.
- 8th Grade Promotion Celebration: SMS 8th graders are invited to attend the Promotion Celebration following the ceremony on June 17th in the SMS Commons from 5:30-7:30 pm. There will be pizza, a DJ and treats to enjoy. If you can help out with your time, please sign up here... if you can donate, check out our list here.
ELA SBAC Testing – A portion of the testing this week includes using headphones or earbuds. Headphones will be provided to students, however, if your student prefers, they may bring his or her own wired headphones for this section of the test as long as they are not wireless. Wireless (Bluetooth) headphones and earbuds are not allowed.
Also, please make sure your student brings their Chromebook to school each day, fully charged.

Flex Time at SMS
We are excited to announce the introduction of Flex Time at SMS. Flex is a block of time in our schedule (during Flight Time) dedicated for our staff to support students in a number of ways. The list below gives you an idea of opportunities students will have during Flex Time:
Academic support from teachers
Enrichment opportunities
Homework help/study hall
Check ins with counselors
Making up missing work, labs, and tests from absences
Club meetings
Extra practice for programs (band, choir, dance, etc.)
Guest speakers
Full implementation of Flex will begin at the start of the new school year in the Fall. Students will go to Flex two days a week, in place of their regularly scheduled Flight Time. Students will sign up weekly in StudentVUE. Attendance will be taken just as it would in any regular class.
In order to prepare for our Fall rollout, we will be piloting three Flex sessions during the last two weeks of this school year on June 7th, 9th, and 14th. Flex will show up as Period 7 in Synergy on those days. Students will receive more information in Flight Time about this and the sign up process.
We are committed to providing exceptional support and opportunities to our students and we are looking forward to offering Flex at SMS.
Prior Week's Information
World Languages Adoption Materials: The Sherwood School District is recommending that Reporteros be adopted by the Sherwood Board of Directors as instructional materials for World Languages. Currently, the world language offered by the District is Spanish. Here is a link to the World Language instructional materials and a form to provide feedback. The District will also be hosting a Community Review night on June 2, 2022, from 5-7 pm at the District Office. Feedback will be shared with the Board of Directors and the community prior to a vote on adoption of the materials, currently scheduled for June 8, 2022.
