VPS Early Learning Newsletter
May/June 2018
Dear Early Learning Families,
As this school year winds down (reminder - June 18th is the last day of school), find time to reflect in the growth your little one has made. If he/she is entering kindergarten in the fall, make sure all paperwork has been completed and returned to the front office of your neighborhood school. If your child is a bit nervous or hesitant to start at a new school or in a new grade, note that this is normal (for parents too!). To ease the nerves, drive by the new school often, visit the playground, have your student help select school supplies, invite current students over to play (familiar faces make new situations less scary) and review what a day at school looks like (reading, math, recess, snack, lunch, learning center time, etc.) Until then, enjoy some quality family time in the beautiful outdoors! Here’s to a great end of the school year!
Best,
Kendra YamamotoEarly Learning Teacher

Chunky Crayon Recipe
• Get out your old crayons, take off the paper and break them into smaller pieces.
• Spray a muffin tin with vegetable spray and place the broken crayons into each section.
• Place the muffin tin into the preheated oven.
• Watch them carefully as they will melt fast. Bake for about 7 – 8 minutes.
• Once melted, carefully remove from the oven.
• Stir them with a toothpick for a “swirly” look.
• Let them cool completely (they can be placed in the freezer to speed up the process.)
• Once cooled, the crayons can be popped out of the muffin tin (tap the back to help them get out.)
• Get out some paper and you are ready to color!

Social Emotional Learning
Nurture your child's self-esteem. A child with a good sense of self is happier, more well-adjusted, and does better in school. Strategies for fostering self-esteem include giving your child responsibilities, allowing her to make age-appropriate choices, and showing your appreciation for a job well done.
