The Weeks in Review
For those new to Austin, I hope you feel the love this school and teachers have for your child and their well-being. We have spent the last 7 class days in Science working on bridge building. We did this for a few reasons. First, it's a great topic for critical thinking. It naturally creates problems for the kids to solve. To add on top of that, the kids had added components from Math and calculating the cost of their bridge. Every group should have constructed a bridge, known the total cost, and had their bridge meet specific specifications outlined in the original challenge rubric. Some groups really adapted well to these new set of circumstances. Others had a tougher time. Whichever side of the fence your child was on I know they all got something from the last few days. They now all have shared struggles and experiences that we can build on for the rest of this year.
In Social Studies, we have spent the first few weeks going over basic geography. We learned about lines of longitude and latitude and the differences between them, and we even had some fun partner challenges with the Atlas. That's right, we are using real atlas' in our classroom (so archaic)!
Ask your child for some of the challenges and maybe even sit down with them and see if you can stump them in a N-S-E-W game.

NUT FREE SNACKS PLEASE
Due to food allergies across the grade level, we are asking that any snack that is brought to school please be nut free. This is not to be confused with lunches that are brought from home as well. Since we eat snacks in our classrooms, we need to maintain the standard across classroom and over the grade level. Please help us maintain a safe learning environment for ALL by cooperating with this request. We sincerely appreciate it.
